The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) is launching a major consultation to reshape Welsh rugby, inviting fans, clubs, and players to help decide whether to keep four teams or cut to as few as two.

Last season, Ioan Cunningham’s squad finished third behind England and France after winning their opening two games against Scotland and Ireland, both of which they will play in reverse order this year.

Wales Women’s senior team have appointed Shaun Connor as their new full-time attack and kicking coach ahead of the forthcoming TikTok Six Nations campaign. The former Dragons and Russia coach has moved from his role with the Dragons Rugby Academy and Wales U20s to join Ioan Cunningham’s coaching team. A former Dragons and Ospreys fly-half, Connor brings a wealth of experience as a professional player and coach to his new role and will continue with the Wales U20s until the end of their current Six Nations campaign.

Captain Hannah Jones insists Wales are a better team than the one which suffered the second worst defeat in their history on Wednesday night. In their final match before the women’s World Cup in New Zealand next month, Wales were hammered 73-7 by England at Ashton Gate in Bristol. There is no shame in conceding 11 tries to the world champions as England dish out that kind of treatment to almost every opposition they meet, but there was still frustration within the Welsh ranks that they had only managed a single try themselves in response.

Wales women head coach Ioan Cunningham is staying on with more players given professional contracts. Cunningham – who had been linked with a number of other job – has extended his deal until 2025, but the new full-time players only have short-term contracts which run to the end of the year. The Welsh Rugby Union also plan other short term deals to get them through the delayed women’s World Cup which starts in October.

Wales captain Siwan Lillicrap has told her team they need to sharpen up from the starting gun if they are to sustain their superb start to the TikTok Women’s Six Nations. Lillicrap’s side came from behind for the second consecutive match to secure a 24-19 victory against Scotland at Cardiff Arms Park. The result – following their opening comeback victory in Ireland – means Wales are celebrating back-to-back Six Nations wins for the first time since 2015, while Scotland’s wait for victory in Cardiff, which goes back to 2004, continues.
