Russell Martin has spoken of his pride in Swansea City for the way they stopped the rot at in-form Huddersfield. The Swans head coach had plenty of praise for his players who earned a 1-1 draw away from home to end a run of four straight defeats. “We could have probably had the three points and I don’t think anyone could have complained,” said Martin, whose team remain 17th in the table, 14 points off the play-offs but with three matches in hand.

Olivier Ntcham has been backed to lead a Swansea City resurgence in the second half of the season after Russell Martin revealed the French star had rejected a big money move to Russia. The Swans head coach is predicting Ntcham will become a growing influence at the club as they bid to rejoin the Championship play-off race. Frenchman Ntcham came to Wales on a free transfer from Celtic back in September, when Martin said the midfielder could have earned more money by joining a major Russian club, believed to be Zenit St. Petersburg.

Russell Martin has admitted he needs to bring in fresh blood if Swansea City are to prevent their current slump becoming a full blown crisis. The Swans head coach has been linked with a number of players in the January transfer window as he tries to halt a slide that has led to four straight defeats. The last of those – which followed a month of inactivity – was their 3-2 home defeat to Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup at the weekend.

Kyle Joseph has been backed to make a big impact after his return to Swansea City and can help fill the void left by Ethan Laird, according to head coach Russell Martin. Joseph has been recalled from his loan spell at Cheltenham Town, where the 20-year-old Scotland U21 international was used primarily as a striker by the League One club and scored four goals in 12 games. Swansea City head coach Russell Martin says the financial impact from playing behind closed doors has already hit his January recruitment plans. Martin – who had held discussions with chief executive Julian Winter and the club’s American owners about new recruits in the January transfer window – says the fall in income from the Welsh Government’s closure of stadia to fans has affected his ability to bring in new players. The Swans will play at least three matches behind closed doors because of the new restrictions to combat rising Covid rates and the Welsh Government has given no end date for the policy, which does not apply in England.

Cardiff City and Swansea City could both be hit by new rules that may impact Welsh sport across the festive fixture lists. Both clubs have already seen their weekend Championship matches postponed because of Covid outbreaks and now they are waiting on an announcement from the Welsh Government over possible new restrictions. First Minister Mark Drakeford has revealed his officials are set for talks with the clubs as well as representatives from others sports including rugby and horse racing. Cardiff are due to be at home to Coventry City on Boxing Day, while the Swans are scheduled to be at Millwall.

Former Swansea City boss Graham Potter believes it will be difficult for football to continue with the current trend of only some games being deemed worthy of postponement due to coronavirus infections among players. Potter revealed his current club Brighton were unsuccessful in their request for Wednesday evening’s clash with Wolves – a 1-0 loss – to be rearranged following a Covid-19 and injury crisis at the club. The depleted Seagulls were without a host of influential players for the game, with top scorer Neal Maupay and Pascal Gross the latest men to join the growing list of absentees.
