By Paul Jones Swansea City are bracing themselves for the likely postponement of their match at QPR this weekend as rising rates of Covid-19 threaten to rip apart the festive fixture list. The Swans are scheduled to visit in-form Rangers, currently fifth in the Championship, on Saturday as Russell Martin’s team bid to halt a […]
Russell Martin has admitted Swansea City don’t have the depth to sustain a promotion play-off challenge. The Swans head coach gave a realistic assessment of his squad in what might be considered as a clear message to the club’s American owners that they need to authorise some spending in the January transfer window. It comes after Martin’s side crashed to a 4-1 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest, a team revitalized under Martin’s successor, Steve Cooper.
By Paul Jones Swansea City plan to shake up their player recruitment strategy with two new positions following the departure of Andy Scott. The former Brentford head of recruitment and Watford sporting director has left his role as head of recruitment at the Swans. The club insists Scott’s decision to move on after two-and-a-half years […]
Jamie Paterson has insisted he is not a diver and he should not have been booked in Swansea City’s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. The Swans midfielder was shown a yellow card for simulation in the first-half of the weekend loss at the Riverside Stadium after tumbling under a challenge from Boro goalkeeper Luke Daniels. But Paterson is adamant that referee Andy Davies made the wrong call and that the Swans should have been awarded a penalty, instead.
By Tom Prosser Russell Martin says the Swansea City fans have played a key part in Jamie Paterson’s success so far this season and he hopes his fine form continues as the Swans look to get back on track away to Middlesbrough on Saturday. The manager cites the “instant connection” between Paterson and the Swansea faithful as a big factor in him hitting the ground running for his new team. Paterson, 29, was a free agent up until a few days before the 2021-22 campaign after leaving Bristol City and having a trial with Middlesbrough.
Russell Martin has praised his Swansea City players for their patience and dominance after a near 900-pass runaround of Barnsley at Oakwell. The Swans made 899 completed passes in their 2-0 victory on Wednesday night, even though they managed only three shots on target. Martin made no apologies for the lack of firepower in a dominant first-half where the home side chased the ball, but the visitors failed to have a strike at goal.
By Gareth James Russell Martin has admitted he was sure Matt Grimes was leaving Swansea City before he signed a new contract last week. Swansea captain Grimes was recently linked with moves to Watford and Fulham but has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract to stay in Wales. And Swansea manager Martin insists Grimes, who was […]
Russell Martin has admitted his frustration with penalty decisions should not deflect responsibility for dropped points at home by Swansea City. The Swans head coach saw his team held to a 1-1 draw against Blackpool when they conceded late on, having had two strong appeals for spot kicks turned down by referee Keith Stroud. The draw was the first time Martin’s side have dropped points at home since mid-September and leaves the club back in 12th place in the Championship, five points adrift of the play-off places.
Jamie Paterson insists Swansea City can come back strongly from their Bournemouth battering with 13 days to come to lick their wounds. The Swans midfielder believes his squad will use the international break wisely after suffering a 4-0 thrashing away to the Championship leaders at the weekend. It was a sobering defeat for Russell Martin’s side who had won four out of their previous five games but then succumbed to their biggest defeat of the season.
By Tom Prosser Swansea City boss Russell Martin has praised his captain Matt Grimes for his off-field leadership and says the culture around the team has helped their summer signings to hit the ground running in South Wales. Jamie Paterson and Joel Piroe have both been key players so far this season and between them they have scored 15 of Swansea’s 20 league goals. Piroe’s success in particular may have been helped how quickly he’s settled in as most 22-year-old’s who have never played outside their own country usually struggle to make a quick impact.
Joel Piroe may have scored nine Championship goals so far this season, but Swansea City head coach Russell Martin reckons he’s one of the club’s top defenders, too. Piroe scored his fourth goal in five games on Tuesday night as the Swans moved into the top 10 thanks to a 2-1 victory at Coventry City. It was the Dutch striker’s 10th of the season in all competitions and his nine in the league make him the fourth top scorer in the division after Aleksander Mitrovic of Fulham, Blackburn Rovers’ Ben Brererton and Dominic Solanke of Bournemouth.
By Paul Jones Ethan Laird enjoyed a successful loan spell at MK Dons playing under Russell Martin last season and he is now delighted to be playing a similar style of football again in South Wales. The wing-back – on loan from Manchester United – has made a big impression early in his stint with the Swans, and teed up Jake Bidwell for the opener in the weekend win over Peterborough. Martin’s side have won plaudits for seeking to display a possession-based style, and they have dominated the share of the ball in the majority of their games so far this season.
