Swansea City manager Russell Martin has revealed that Jamie Paterson will return to the first-team fray following his side’s 1-0 home defeat to Luton Town. Paterson, so influential for the Swans pre-Christmas, has missed the six last games after seemingly falling out with the club over the terms of his one-year contract extension, that was triggered by his employers earlier this month. It seemed inevitable the 31-year-old would be heading out of South Wales in the transfer window, but despite interest from QPR, a move never materialised.

Swansea City appear resigned to the fact that Jamie Paterson has played his final game for the club. But the midfielder – who has been the subject of two unsuccessful bids from Queens Park Rangers – will not be allowed to leave in this transfer window unless the London club improve their offer. It is understood that the Swans want £750,000 for Paterson, who head coach Russell Martin had hoped would have revered his decision to down tools.

Russell Martin has praised his Swansea City players’ character as they made it three matches unbeaten in the past 10 days. The Swans head coach was happy enough to take a point from a 0-0 draw at promotion-chasing Queens Park Rangers, which backed up a weekend victory over Preston. The visitors had midfielder Flynn Downes sent off in added time after a clash with Charlie Austin, but the 10-men hung on to cut the gap between themselves and sixth-placed Huddersfield to 12 points with three games still in hand.

Russell Martin has paid tribute to Swansea City’s fans, claiming they inspired his team to victory after returning to their home stadium for the first time in seven weeks. Ryan Manning’s superb long-range strike was enough to seal all three points for Swansea as they overcame Preston 1-0. Manning’s 51st-minute strike was reward for a much-improved display after the break from  Martin’s men and the result leaves them sitting just behind mid-table in the Championship, with four points gathered from back-to-back unbeaten games.
