Newport County manager Michael Flynn believes he has taken an important step in rebuilding his squad for the new season, having re-signed defender Scot Bennett.
Having already seen Jamille Matt slip through his fingers when the striker moved to League Two rivals Forest Green Rovers, Flynn was determined to secure Bennett as the first keystone to his reconstruction job following the shutdown of last season.
There remains a great deal of re-shaping for the County manager to do before the new campaign, but he views the retention of Bennett – who seemed destined to leave after the running down of his previous contract – as crucial to those plans.
After Bennett agreed a new one-year deal, Flynn said: “I am extremely pleased to get the deal over the line.
“Scot is an important player for this squad and one that I know that I can rely on. He’s also a great fit, both on and off the field, and it those qualities that will be a massive boost for our group.”
Bennett, 29, made 37 appearances for Newport last season and has been a central figure for the club in recent years, playing in 133 league games since joining from Notts County four years ago.
“I am delighted we’ve been able to get the deal finalised,” said Bennett.
“Over the last few seasons, my family have really settled in the area and I am very happy that will continue.”
