Hey, Swansea City . . . What’s the Plan for Zan?

Zan is the man for Swansea City right now, but is that for the short or long term, considers Ian Mitchelmore.

With just nine games left to play this season, Zan Vipotnik remains firmly in the mix to scoop the Championship's Golden Boot award for 2025-26.

Following a mixed debut campaign in south Wales after joining from crisis club Bordeaux, the Slovenia international has been the stand-out forward in England's second tier this time around.

Put simply, the Swans would have been in a far more perilous position when Alan Sheehan was sacked in mid-November if it wasn't for the clinical nature of Vipotnik - whose ruthless streak in front of goal bailed his side out of trouble on numerous occasions when they had been alarmingly blunt in attack under the Irishman.

He has continued his sublime season under current boss Vitor Matos and has played a prominent role in ensuring the Swans go into their final nine games as a team with an outside shot of making the top six.

Ahead of Friday night's Welsh derby fixture with Wrexham at Stok Cae Ras, Vipotnik's season stats make for incredible reading.

The forward - still just 23 years of age - has netted 17 Championship goals.

That tally has come from an expected goals rating of just 7.82, meaning he is outperforming his xG by a whopping 9.18 - significantly better than any other player in the Championship.

Perhaps more impressively, not a single one of the striker's 19 goals across all competitions for Swansea this season have been from the penalty spot.

To that end, the Swans are likely to be posed with a serious question to answer in the summer when it comes to their prized asset.

Do they cash in on Vipotnik by selling him to the highest bidder – and there are likely to be plenty ready to pay - or keep building around him?

With high-profile investors Luka Modric and Snoop Dogg on board, the club are determined to increase their revenue to ensure they have the capacity to invest more into the first team in the future.

But as things currently stand, they are still early on in that long-term process and may yet need to make a high-profile sale this summer.

History shows us this is what Swansea have regularly done in the past, as they have done with players including Oli McBurnie, Joe Rodon, Dan James, Joel Piroe and Flynn Downes since being relegated from the Premier League in 2018.

Should that be the case, Vipotnik would certainly be among the contenders to be moved on, along with Ethan Galbraith or potentially Goncalo Franco.

Although, crucially, the club are maybe in a stronger position when it comes to Vipotnik.

The frontman's current contract with Swansea runs through until the summer of 2028.

That, combined with his goal return this season, will mean - regardless of whether he goes on to win the Golden Boot - the Swans would be able to hold out for a significant fee.

If there are no takers at the higher end of the market - £12m to £13m is the valuation currently given to Vipotnik by Transfermarkt.com – then the Swans could simply hold on to him, knowing there will be plenty of value left in the striker through next season.

So, it might be there is every possibility that the club's ambitious ownership group will do everything in their power to keep hold of Vipotnik as they look to build on the impressive work done under Matos so far.

The eye test alone will show that, under Matos, Swansea are evolving into a side far more in keeping with what the typical member of the Jack Army wishes to watch in comparison to their style under Sheehan.

The numbers back it up too. Swansea have gained 1.66 points per game under Matos, a major improvement on the 1.13 points per game collected under Sheehan this season, prior to his dismissal.

So, Swansea's owners will certainly feel the club is on the right track when it comes to their quest to reach the Premier League,.

A victory at Wrexham would put Swansea just two points behind their Welsh rivals and make a late tilt at the play-offs a genuine possibility.

If it fails, then the expansion of the play-offs in the Championship next season – to eight clubs - makes promotion even more attainable.

It remains to be seen whether it will be 'keep' or 'sell' when it comes to Vipotnik.

But ultimately, it is Swansea's own call to make, which means they could benefit significantly from either outcome.
