V for Vitor, Victory and Very Calm Response to the Revival of Swansea City

Vitor Matos cut a satisfied but measured figure after Swansea City’s emphatic 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

It was a performance he framed as another important step in a longer process rather than a single statement result.

The Swans’ head coach watched his side dominate from start to finish at the Swansea.com Stadium, with Goncalo Franco opening the scoring before Zan Vipotnik struck twice and substitute Malick Yalcouye added a late fourth.

The result moved Swansea up to 15th in the Championship, within five points of the play-offs, while pushing Sheffield Wednesday closer to relegation after extending their winless league run to 25 matches.

For Matos, though, the emphasis was firmly on development, consistency and mindset – themes he has repeatedly stressed since taking charge in November, when Swansea were only four points above the relegation zone.

Since then, they have collected 25 points from a possible 45 and doubled their win ratio.

“What’s most important is what I said since the first day – the squad has a lot of potential,” said Matos.

“We needed to make the squad the best possible team to compete. That’s what we are still doing. That’s what we are trying and this is what drives us.

“That’s the championship this season as well. You win one game, you think you are close to the play-offs.

“You lose one game, you think you are close to the relegation.

“So being emotionally stable is quite important. That’s what mindset we need to have.”

The afternoon showcased many of the principles Matos has been instilling.

Swansea controlled possession, moved the ball patiently and committed numbers forward with confidence.

Their opening goal after 19 minutes was a prime example, a flowing move involving 18 passes before Franco finished calmly.

“We keep building our game and there were a lot of players involved in the first goal, starting from deep, switching from one side to the other and Franco finishing,” Matos said.

Vipotnik then provided the cutting edge. His first goal was a thunderous free-kick from the edge of the box, driven through the wall, before a sharp second-half finish from close range took his season tally to 17 goals, 15 of them in the league.

“Before the free kick the players were asking who could take it. I said if I could I would shoot with full power and aim for the goalkeeper’s corner,” said Vipotnik.

“I made it and I am so happy for the team and the fans - it is an amazing win. It was a really powerful shot, not easy to save, and it was my luck it went in.

“Vitor (Matos) has given me the freedom to enjoy playing. That has led to these results and we are all enjoying them.”

Matos was pleased not only with the striker’s output, but with his ongoing development within the team framework.

“We are very happy Zan is still with us. He is still growing and becoming a more complete player, but 15 goals is a good mark,” he said.

The final goal from Yalcouye underlined Swansea’s dominance and capped their biggest victory of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday failed to register a single shot on target, extending their goal drought to nine league games and leaving them stuck on minus seven points following an 18-point deduction.
