Newport County manager Mike Flynn has earned the FA Cup reward he was hoping for with a glamour clash at home to Tottenham in the fourth round.
Flynn had wished to be paired with Liverpool, his boyhood club, after his League Two side stunned Leeds United on Sunday with a 2-1 victory.
But a tie at home to Spurs, who could include their England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli, as well as Wales defender Ben Davies, will be almost as sweet for Flynn who had insisted his main hope was that the club made as much money as possible.
Flynn is set to get his financial gain, with the tie likely to attract the TV cameras as well a sell-out crowd at Rodney Parade.
“I’m absolutely buzzing about the draw,” he said.
“It’s huge for the club and the players deserve it for their hard work. We can’t wait.”
“It’s an amazing draw and it looks like a good candidate for TV. It’s going to be so important for the club and the club’s finances and is a fantastic reward for the players for all their hard work this season.”
County will host their Premier League opponents on the weekend of January 26-29. The last time the two sides met was in 1960 when County hosted Spurs at Somerton Park – a match that ended in a 4-0 defeat for the Exiles.
Cardiff City could end up hosting Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City if they are able to overcome Mansfield in their third round replay.
The Bluebirds famously beat City 3-2 in their first home Premier League match in 2013 and also overcame the same opponents at the same stage of the FA Cup in 1994 thanks to a Nathan Blake goal.
Swansea City will travel to League Two high-fliers Notts County if they can see off Championship leaders Wolves in their replay.
