Goals ace Lee Trundle is still banging ‘em in at the age of 40.
The former Swansea City striker has netted 38 time in 18 matches for Welsh League Division Two leaders Llanelli Town and has no plans to stop.
“I’ll keep playing until my legs won’t work any more,” says Trundle. “I love playing, I love scoring goals.”
Trundle has played a major role in revitalising Llanelli AFC and they are hot favourites for promotion to the First Division and have qualified for the Nathaniel Car Sales Cup semi-finals.
They play Caerau Ely at Afan Lido FC on Wednesday, April 5, while Bridgend Street and Haverfordwest County are in the other semi-final.
Trundle and Jordan Follows, who has netted 25 goals in 22 matches, are leading the Llanelli charge towards promotion. They are the only unbeaten team in the top three divisions of the Welsh League.
“I spent the early part of my career in Welsh Premier League football with Rhyl and loved it,” said Trundle. “That gave me the chance to move on and sign for Wrexham and my career took off from there.
“Now I’m back in Welsh football and have scored 30-plus goals for Llanelli this season.
“The lads are a great bunch and I am loving it.
“The only time I will stop is when my legs won’t move and I stop scoring goals.”
Scouser Trundle has scored hat-tricks for Llanelli and and all sorts of goals from powerful free-kicks to cheeky chips and accurate swerving shots which have left goalkeepers helpless.
He is also an ambassador for Premier League Swansea, while he has been taking his coaching badges on a course with fellow ex-Swans Leon Britton, Owain Tudur Jones and Sam Ricketts.
Trundle has also played for Bristol City, Leeds United, Preston North End, Chester City and Neath during his career.
It was Brian Flynn who gave Trundle his break, taking him to Wrexham where he scored 30 goals in 78 matches. Just over two years later, during 2003, he moved south to link up with Flynn again, this time at Swansea.
He netted 78 times in 146 appearances during four years with Swansea before a £1m transfer to Bristol City 10 years ago.
Trundle has scored almost 300 goals during his playing career in England and Wales, but he is far from finished yet.
‘Trunds’ is knocking them in for Llanelli now and his latest strikes came in their latest match, 4-1 win against second-placed Briston Ferry Lansawel at Stebonheath Park.
It was a feisty clash which resulted in eight bookings, one dismissal and two penalties, both converted by Trundle.
The victory extended Llanelli’s lead at the top to six points and they have 12 fixtures left.
Briton Ferry had South Africa-born goalkeeper Steve Cann, a player with experience at Derby County, Rotherham, Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Port Talbot, sent off for a foul.
Rory Healey initially took over from Ferry captain Cann and his first task was picking the ball out of the net after Trundle scored his second goal by smashing the ball past him. Cann later made way for Sam Baker, who tok over the gloves.
Llanelli led 3-0 at half-time and went on to win comfortably. New signing Ryan Griffiths pulled one back for Briton Ferry, while Trundle set up Follows to complete the victory.
