Christian Fuchs Insists Newport Near Miss Against Leaders Can Inspire Survival

Christian Fuchs voiced his pride in his Newport County side despite a painful late defeat, insisting their performance against League Two leaders Bromley showed the character needed to survive.

The Exiles were undone in cruel fashion at Rodney Parade as their former winger Corey Whitely struck in the 88th minute to hand the visitors a 1-0 victory and extend their unbeaten run to 20 matches.

It was a result that left Newport sitting 22nd in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, but Fuchs focused on the level his players produced rather than the outcome.

"It was a great performance. I think, when you look at the game, you cannot tell who is number one in the table," said Fuchs.

Newport had built on the momentum of their recent win at Barnet with one of their most impressive displays of the season, taking control for long periods and pushing the promotion-chasing visitors onto the back foot—particularly during a dominant first half.

Despite creating numerous openings, however, they were unable to find the breakthrough that their approach play merited.

"I'm very proud of the team, with the character that they played, with the intensity, the energy," added Fuchs.

“They didn't deserve at the end what they got from the game, but that's one of those moments - you play really well and don't deserve that loss at the end."

The home side continued to dictate the tempo after the interval, maintaining pressure and limiting Bromley’s attacking threat. Yet their lack of cutting edge proved costly as the contest wore on.

Fuchs added: "We should be more clinical with our chances, that's very clear. I think we had chances for three games [and three victories]. But, overall, I'm very proud of the boys and we need to build on that again."

Just as it seemed Newport might at least secure a valuable point in their battle to stay in the Football League, Whitely—once a fan favourite at Rodney Parade—delivered the decisive moment late on to snatch all three points for the visitors.

The defeat was a significant blow in the context of the relegation fight, leaving Newport precariously placed with eight matches remaining, while Bromley strengthened their grip at the top, moving five points clear as they chase a historic promotion.

Even so, the manner of Newport’s display drew praise from the opposition dugout.

Bromley boss Andy Woodman admitted his side had been second best for much of the contest and acknowledged the effort shown by Fuchs’ team.

"We were terrible. I mean, we were terrible. And were we terrible or were Newport fighting for their lives? And they run their socks off and they made it tough for us. And we just couldn't get going," said Woodman.

"You know, we've had one or two problems coming into the game with players we've had to kind of really look after. It's been tricky. But, you know, credit to Newport and credit to the manager.

"What he's done here, he's turned his team around and I mean they really didn't deserve to lose tonight. And I don't say that often."

While the result leaves Newport in a precarious position, the performance offered clear encouragement. Fuchs’ side showed resilience, intensity and attacking intent against the division’s form team—qualities their manager believes can carry them through the final stretch of the campaign.

For Newport, the challenge now is to turn displays like this into points as they look to preserve their League Two status, with Fuchs confident that if they maintain this level, results will follow.
