George Byers has signalled his determination to push for promotion with Swansea City after signing a new three-year contract at the club.
The former Watford midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season and was one of the club’s most consistent performers from the turn of the year.
Along with Daniel James and Oli McBurnie, Byers was one of the reasons why the Swans were able to come with a late surge that almost took them into the play-offs, before they finally fell away.
The 23-year-old has just returned from the club’s pre-season camp in Spain and said: “We all want to improve as a team and better what we achieved last year.
“Our immediate aim is to push on and finish higher than we did last season – and I believe we can do that.
“I’m aiming to carry on where I left off. I think I showed in the second half of the season what I can do.
“But I want to keep on improving. I feel I’m ready to kick on and I believe there is still more to come from me.”
Byers made 25 appearances last season and scored three goals and is likely to be a pivotal player for new manager Steve Cooper, whose brief is to build from within.
“I enjoyed working with him in Spain,’’ said Byers of Cooper. “He has some good ideas and the boys have really taken to him well.”
