Lennie Lawrence, the man who led Cardiff City into the Championship in 2003, has linked up with League Two Newport County.
The hugely experienced Lawrence will work alongside manager Mike Flynn in County’s fight to avoid relegation.
He has been given the role of first team management consultant to help Flynn and assistant Wayne Hatswell.
Lawrence, 69, watched County lose 3-1 at home to Blackpool on Saturday and his appointment was confirmed today.
Newport are at home against Luton Town in a crucial League Two match tonight (7.45pm).
“I met Michael at the Football Association of Wales Uefa Pro license course and when approached I was delighted to offer some support,” said Lawrence.
“I have undertaken this type of role on several occasions and will be there for Michael to offer advice and guidance when needed.”
Flynn says he is ‘over the moon’ with the appointment, adding: “It’s not only great for the club, it’s excellent for me personally and for my managerial career.
“I’m always learning and if I can’t learn from someone who’s managed over a 1,000 times in the Football League then I won’t be able to learn from anyone.
“Not only will Lennie be important for my development, he will also be helpful to the board as he brings with him a wealth of football knowledge.
“I’m sure having someone like Lennie on board will give the players a massive lift too.
“I also hope that bringing Lennie in will show the fans how committed I am to doing what’s best for the club.”
Lawrence is a former Bluebirds, Charlton and Middlesbrough manager who is among the select group who have taken charge of more than 1,000 league matches.
He was most recently assistant manager to Paul Trollope with Cardiff City.
County are second from bottom, seven points off safety in League Two, and have won two of their last three fixtures.
Lenell John-Lewis, Jamie Turley and Ben Tozer are ruled out of the County squad by injury, but Darren Jones could be involved.
Captain Joss Labadie is rated doubtful after suffering a minor hip injury against Blackpool.
