Every Manager Loves a Liam Cullen, Says Swansea City Boss Vitor Matos

Vitor Matos has underlined just how highly he rates Liam Cullen after describing the Swansea City academy product as the kind of player “all the coaches love”.

The praise comes as the Swans prepare to travel to take on high-flying Ipswich Town in the Championship after another decisive Cullen contribution in midweek.

Cullen was the hero on Tuesday night, striking a stoppage-time equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Preston North End at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The dramatic moment was followed by an equally surreal one, as club co-owner Snoop Dogg – who had visited the training ground the previous day and printed his own No.20 shirt – was in the dressing room after full-time and signed the shirt of Swansea’s actual number 20.

For Cullen, a Pembrokeshire-born forward who joined the club at eight years old, it was a memorable evening.

For Matos, it was further proof of the 24-year-old’s value.

"I like Liam a lot," Swansea's head coach said. "I have a problem because I like all the players a lot but I can only pick 11.

"But the good thing is that all of them are really professional and really Liam is one of those.

"He loves the club, born here, grew here. He has this mentality, which I love, that is if he's to play five minutes, he will play that five minutes trying to make an impact and trying to make that five minutes the best of his life.

"If it's 10 minutes it's 10. If it's 90, it's 90. That's why all the coaches love him, because he's the kind of player that we all like."

Cullen, Swansea’s 12-goal top scorer last season, has had to adapt to a slightly deeper attacking role this term, with fierce competition for places limiting his starts.

Yet Matos insists his influence remains significant, particularly from the bench.

"[When] he's on the bench, we know that he has this mentality to try to change the direction of the game," Matos added.

"He had that as well with me in the Portsmouth game, when he scored as well. In other games he came on and created chances. In this game [against Preston] he created chances and scored.

"It's just a matter of how we can use him. I am really happy because he came on and scored and I think that's good for him especially, because he was wearing the same number as Snoop!"

That late leveller ensured Swansea have lost only twice in their last six matches.

They currently sit 15th in the Championship, having recorded wins over Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City in recent weeks, alongside the draw with Preston.

However, away form remains a concern. Only West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday have collected fewer than Swansea’s 14 points on the road, with eight defeats in their last 10 away league fixtures.

Saturday’s trip to Portman Road therefore presents a stern examination.

Ipswich have won their last three league meetings with the Swans and have lost just once at home all season.

But Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has been impressed by the progress Swansea have made under Matos.

“I think they have had a really good start,” he said.

“I’ve been really impressed watching them. They played good football early in the season and they’ve brought in lots of good players over the last season or two. A lot from international markets who take a bit of time to settle, but I think they’ve got a really good and deep squad.

“I think the intensity they are playing at is really impressive. Their last 10 games or so, they are the team who have run the most in the league in most metrics.

“They are one of the top teams in terms of their pressing, counter-pressing and possession.

“I think we are facing a side tomorrow, in terms of playing style and the type of challenge it’s going to be, that will make it a really top-tier challenge.

“We know what that’s going to take - it’s going to take a huge amount of teamwork and effort, and the crowd is going to have to play a really big part in that.

“We have to be confident but also humble to know that it’s a really strong opponent and there are going to be phases in the game when we know we have to dig in and defend, and I think it’s going to be a really challenging game.

“We want to make it a really challenging game for them and we believe it will be and it should make for a good one.”
