A dramatic strike from Joe Thomas – his first goal of the season – secured a vital victory over fellow strugglers Harrogate Town, lifting the Exiles four points clear of the bottom two with just three games remaining.
While the result keeps Newport in 22nd place, it ensures their survival remains firmly in their own hands heading into a tense run-in that includes a potentially decisive final-day trip to Barrow.
But for manager Fuchs, the message was immediate and uncompromising: the job is far from finished.
"It's a huge win," said Fuchs. "We knew the importance of the game and what was on the line.
"It's a good step in the right direction, but we need to push on.
"We need to keep going. There's no chance to relax and lean back. Not for a single moment. We need to do more.
"I didn't like that we fell back in the first half and were less aggressive, less intense and didn't get the ball into the right areas.
“I know that the boys can play for the same intensity that we did in the first 25 minutes.
“There's a lot still to work on and improve but, at the same time, we can really enjoy today's win.
"The boys showed a response after losing two in a row - to come back really strong, on the front foot and deserving the three points."

Newport had suffered setbacks against Crawley Town and Notts County over Easter, increasing the pressure heading into Saturday’s clash.
They responded with urgency, taking an early lead through Nathan Opoku before being pegged back, only for Thomas to deliver a decisive moment.
"It feels really good," added Austrian boss Fuchs.
"It's a big relief to walk away with three points and I'm very pleased with the performance the boys put in.
“We started really well. Maybe we took our foot off the gas a little bit after we scored, but we found our way back into the game and stayed resilient.
"We knew we had to continue being on the front foot and being really direct and that worked for us. Kudos to them for the way they stuck to the plan."

Despite the significance of the result, Fuchs was quick to stress that any sense of comfort would be misplaced.
With Cheltenham Town, Oldham Athletic and Barrow still to come, the Newport boss insists his players must maintain their intensity.
That balance between satisfaction and urgency underpins Newport’s approach as the season reaches its climax.
Fuchs wants his side to embrace a proactive mindset rather than attempting to protect their position.
"We go into every game to win - that has to be our mentality," he added.
"It's not a case of sitting back and see what happens. We need to be like we were today - on the front foot and be a nuisance for the opposition. When we do that, that's definitely playing to our strength."

Thomas’ match-winning contribution was a rare but decisive moment from a player not known for his goals, and Fuchs was quick to highlight its importance.
"Joe has been doing really well," said the manager.
"Some players don't score so many, but when they score they are usually very important ones. I'm very pleased for him.
"It's the first time I've seen him shooting! He's usually further back. But we know Joe is good with the ball and it was a phenomenal strike. "He's fine," he added. "He took a knock but he's going to be fine for the next game."
With Harrogate still rooted to the foot of the table and Barrow level on points but only ahead on goal difference, the margins remain tight.
Newport’s advantage is valuable, but as Fuchs has underlined, it will count for little unless his players maintain their focus.
For now, the Exiles have momentum – but their manager is determined to ensure it is not wasted.
