Caernarfon and Flint Clash for Welsh Cup Glory

The first final was played back in 1878 and the Welsh Cup is still a compelling highlight of the season, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

Following another game week of twists and turns, the Cymru Premier is put on hold this weekend as the Welsh Cup takes centre stage.

For the neutrals, Sunday's version promises to be one of the most exciting in years as The New Saints will not feature.

But for the two participants, there is far more than just a trophy on the line.

Caernarfon Town - who defeated Newtown, Penrhyncoch, Cardiff Met, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl 1879 to reach the final - are bidding to lift the Welsh Cup for the first time in their history.

Their opponents, Flint Town United, are targeting glory in the competition for the first time in 72 years having overcome Bow Street, Airbus UK, Penybont, Trearddur Bay and Bangor City 1876 in the earlier rounds.

It's fair to say neither side goes into the final in rip-roaring form, although the Canaries could hold a slight advantage.

They are competing in the Championship Conference of domestic proceedings at present while the Silkmen are slugging it out in the Play-off Conference.

Richard Davies' men can take plenty of confidence after ending their three-game losing run with a morale-boosting win over Colwyn Bay on Good Friday.

Zack Clarke added to a Solomon Forde own goal as they got another valuable three points, and boss Davies admitted the prospect of representing Caernarfon in the final on Sunday has been a distraction for some of his players of late.

"We can look forward to it now and our full concentration will be on that. I think it's been a little bit of a distraction if I'm honest, but it's hard for it not to be," Davies told Sgorio.
"Everyone knows how big it is and how big an occasion it is.

"We knew if we got the win today, going into Flint next week, it puts us in good stead.

"That's what we needed. I think if we play like that we'll put ourselves in a very good position.
Hopefully we can get all of the fans down there and it'll be a great experience."

And on the win over Bay, he commented: "I can't give our players enough praise, that'll give them so much confidence. To keep a clean sheet, and the goals, we could have had five or six. There's lots of positives."

In an additional boost for the club as a whole, their young guns came from behind to beat The New Saints 3-2 at the Go Goodwins Stadium to lift the FAW Youth Cup over Easter weekend.

There has not been such positivity at Flint when it comes to league matters.

The Silkmen are now winless in four league games having suffered back-to-back losses against bottom side Llanelli Town and Europe-chasing Haverfordwest County.

It means that, while there is huge excitement around Sunday's showpiece final at Rodney Parade, something of a dark cloud has formed over the club who have been dragged right back into the relegation picture.

Bala Town - who host Briton Ferry Llansawel on the final day of the regular season - have won two of their last three games to take the relegation battle down to the wire.

The Lakesiders are now just two points behind Flint who head to Cardiff Met for their final fixture of the league campaign six days after the Welsh Cup final.

But while there is understandable concern over their league situation, boss Steve Evans says his sole focus at present is on securing a golden ticket to Europe by lifting the trophy in Newport this weekend.

"Ultimately our focus now turns to the Welsh Cup. League-wise, it's still in our hands," he told Sgorio.

"It's a great opportunity for the club to get into Europe. We'll be doing everything in our power to win that game and get to Europe.

"Then our focus will change to the league game against Cardiff Met where we know we've got to go and win."

Dafydd Iwan will sing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau ahead of kick-off in Newport in addition to performing a rendition of his iconic hit Yma O Hyd in a bid to stir up the crowd, the vast majority of which will have travelled from north Wales.

But as Davies puts it, the prize on offer is ultimately the focus.

"The Cofi Army will be there, they'll bring the numbers," he said. "We're hoping to enjoy the day, but the important thing is to win the game."
