Lawrence Vigouroux plans to end the season as he began it - studying opposition strikers and ensuring he has covered every detail.

The Swansea City goalkeeper is known for his long hours in the club’s analysis room at their Fairwood training ground, where he insists all the groundwork is laid for eye-catching saves.

There have been plenty of those this season, not just for the Swans, but also for Chile in their World Cup qualification campaign.

The 31-year-old was unable to carry the South Americans through to the finals this summer, but his emergence as their No.1 number one coincided with his dominance of the jersey this season at club level.

His senior debut for Chile finally arrived last September, more than a decade after first entering the national set-up.

It came in the most demanding of circumstances - a World Cup qualifier against Brazil at the Maracanã.

“Just pulling up to the stadium was incredible,” he says.

“I just looked to my left, and there was the Maracanã. It was something crazy that I never thought would ever happen.

Chile lost 3-0 that night, but Vigouroux made four memorable saves and even before kick-off, the surreal nature of the occasion had already hit home.

English-born Vigouroux’s father is Chilean, and he also has a grandfather and an uncle who live in the country.

“I had my dad messaging me asking for a link to watch the game. It was like so much stuff happening at once.”

It was a breakthrough moment after years of near-misses, having been named in senior squads multiple times without playing.

Since then, he has added six further caps — including a clean sheet against Uruguay — and is firmly part of Chile’s plans heading into the next World Cup qualification cycle.

That context matters. Vigouroux’s performances for Swansea are not just about the here and now, they are about maintaining standards for future international selection.

“A lot of players in this changing room, they'll be going to the World Cup this summer,” he says. “You're trying to go into those matches in the best form you can be, so there’s still lots to play for.”

The former Burnley and Leyton Orient keeper - who will hope to keep a 13th clean sheet of the season in all competitions at Leicester City on Saturday - has an approach built on detail. Hours are spent studying opposition forwards, particularly penalty takers, looking for patterns in their technique and decision-making.

That work was evident in Monday’s 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough - where he produced a brilliant save to deny Aidan Morris - even if it did not bring the reward he wanted when it came to the spot kick.

In fact, at Orient, Vigouroux managed to make eight saves from 22 penalties faced, but he has yet to deny any taker for the Swans in seven attempts over two seasons.

The research and diligence has brought reward in open play, though, and will be needed at Leicester. Despite their position near the bottom of the table, they remain a side with Premier League quality, insists Vigouroux.

“It'll be really tough. They're a team that was in the Premier League last season. We've got to expect an onslaught because they need to win.”

While Swansea sit mid-table, Vigouroux insists there will be no-one who is mentally heading for the beach. Internally, he says there is a focus on building momentum and maintaining standards.

“I’ve never felt players slack off. These are the kind of games where you can get as many points as you can, leave the season in a good place, and then you're raring to go for the next season.”

His own performances have earned widespread praise this season but he insists that as Swansea are now more solid defensively, his role has shifted from constant action to moments that demand concentration.

“I couldn't do it without my defenders. They make things easier. Whereas before, I was making 10, 11 saves a game. I think now it's one or two.

“You have to stay in the game.”

“I think what will go under the radar is we make 13 or 14 blocks a game. Other players stop it at source so that I don't have to do anything.”

Against Leicester, the hosts will be fighting to avoid relegation.

“It’s a massive game for them. So it’s a massive game for us as well,” he says.
