For Christian Fuchs, the target is to kick-start Newport County's Easter weekend with more than just a Good Friday.

The Exiles gave their League Two survival hopes a major boost last time out as they earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town courtesy of Bobby Kamwa's second-half strike.

It ensured they go into Friday's mouth-watering fixture with relegation rivals Crawley Town - who themselves earned an impressive 2-0 win against Gillingham last weekend - at Rodney Parade, one place and two points above the drop zone.

Barrow - currently 23rd - have a somewhat daunting looking trip to MK Dons to look forward to, although they go into that match-up having stunned leaders Bromley 2-1 on Saturday.

As for bottom side Harrogate Town, they head to Grimsby Town who remain firmly in the hunt to earn a play-off spot.

In the aftermath of his side's vital win against Shrewsbury, Newport’s Austrian boss Fuchs was keen to stress that he had no concerns over what goes on elsewhere. County’s destiny, crucially, is in their control.

"We have it in our own hands. That's all we are looking for. It's only important what we are doing," said the 2015-16 Premier League winner.

While they have lost three of their last six matches, Newport have claimed victories in each of the other three, a major improvement compared to the woeful run that saw the Exiles earn just three victories across their opening 22 league fixtures this term.

There is no doubt the side has improved.

It has had a significant impact on the view of Newport's survival chances, too.

Having been written off around a month ago, Opta now give Fuchs' men just a 29.74% chance of being relegated, significantly lower than the 55.08% chance of relegation they give to Barrow and 85.98% for Harrogate.

And the sense of belief that Newport - who were four points adrift of safety when Fuchs was named as Dave Hughes' successor in November - can beat the drop this season has never wavered when it comes to the head coach.

He knows the importance of Friday's meeting with Crawley only too well and has called on the backing of the Amber Army for the pivotal fixture.

The club are deploying the Kids for a Quid initiative, allowing under-16s to attend for just £1 in a bid to boost the atmosphere against the side now managed by former Turkey international Colin Kazim-Richards.

Fuchs will hope to be boosted by the returns of Michael Spellman and Lee Jenkins for the visit of Crawley, although Monday's trip to Notts County could also be an option for either of the pair to come back from their respective injury issues should they not be risked too early.

Kamwa, too, will hopefully benefit from netting what was just his second goal of the season - both of which have come in his last four matches - to earn his side victory over Shrewsbury.

The 26-year-old was top scorer for the club last season with nine goals and truly needs to use his effort against the Shrews as a springboard to finish the campaign strongly and help fire Newport to survival.

A huge opportunity awaits Newport on Friday as they bid to achieve something they are yet to do this season... earn back-to-back league wins.

Achieve that, and they will take another enormous stride towards ensuring they remain in the Football League.

"It's all about us," added Fuchs.

"If we continue playing the way we are playing, if we continue collecting points, it really doesn't matter what the others are doing.

"We are aware what the situation is."
