With just seven matches left to play during the regular season, the race to secure a Championship play-off spot is well and truly on, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

Wrexham kept themselves firmly in the mix to finish in the top six with a vital 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane prior to the March international break.

But the full focus now swiftly switches back to their run-in, which resumes with a trip to West Bromwich Albion on Good Friday.

The Baggies impressed in earning a 3-2 win over the Red Dragons in the reverse fixture at a sunny Stok Cae Ras in mid-August, although their campaign has been somewhat shambolic since their encouraging opening month of the season.

That said, following Welshman Eric Ramsay's ill-fated 44-day stint in charge, West Brom have improved dramatically under interim boss James Morrison of late and are unbeaten in four games heading into their Easter clash with Wrexham.

They also beat Hull City and Bristol City without conceding a goal in their final two matches before the international break.

So, there is no doubt that Wrexham are facing a resurgent West Brom side - and one that is now two places and four points above the second tier's relegation zone.

Following a manic schedule and a number of injury concerns for Wrexham prior to the break, the overriding emotion following victory at Sheffield United was most likely relief.

But now in a position of being a chaser as opposed to being chased, Phil Parkinson's men may well adopt something of an underdog mentality.

Indeed, after their dramatic triumph over the Blades, Parkinson's long-time assistant Steve Parkin said: "It's been fairly obvious a few people wrote us off after the Watford game (a 3-1 defeat)."

Who exactly Parkin was referring to remains to be seen.

But the 60-year-old - who represented his side's next opponents West Brom between 1989 and 1992 - may be bang on the money with his post-match comments.

Opta's League Prediction model currently says Wrexham have a 44.34% chance of finishing in the play-off places.

That is significantly lower than both Hull City (74.24%) and Southampton (68.28%) who are currently fifth and sixth in the table respectively.

So, it seems the Red Dragons are being written off by some, at least, even if it is only the data scientists and number-crunchers who work for Opta.

It's perhaps understandable, though, given that Wrexham came into the Championship on the back of three successive promotions while in-form Southampton - unbeaten in their last 12 league games, nine of which have been wins - were playing Premier League football as recently as last term.

It felt inevitable that the Saints would come good at some stage.

With Tonda Eckert's side taking on Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday night, Wrexham can land an early psychological blow ahead of the meeting between the sides in north Wales next Tuesday night, by claiming a positive result at West Brom, in addition to having an extra day of recovery.

Either a win or a draw at The Hawthorns on Friday will guarantee that Parkinson's outfit go into the match against the Saints as a team in the play-off positions, albeit having played a game more than the men from the south coast of England.

And Wrexham look set to welcome striker Kieffer Moore and midfielder Matty James back to their squad in the near future too.

In an additional bonus, it has been confirmed that James' fellow central midfielder Ben Sheaf is also on the grass, running, and could yet feature in the run-in having previously been expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Whatever the outcome of the promotion challenge, there will inevitably be a number of twists and turns right the way through to the final minutes of the final day of the campaign on Saturday, May 2.

And Parkin has no intention of missing out on the end of year play-off mayhem.

"We want to be part of the party at the end of the year, don't we?" he said after his side's triumph over Sheffield United.

"We want to be one of the teams that's pushing to get in the play-offs.

"We've got great games coming up. We've got games against the big teams as well, which is important."
