Business as Usual . . . Craig Harrison’s New Saints Start with a Win

The New Saints got Phase 2 of the JD Cymru Premier League off to a flying start as they extended their lead at the top of the Championship Conference.

In chasing down a 17th title, Craig Harrison’s men banked a 1-0 home win over Barry Town United and saw their nearest rivals draw. That allowed them to stretch their lead at the top to eight points.

Having lost their opening game of Phase 1 at home to Briton Ferry Llansawel back in August the champions were in no mood to let history repeat itself. A seventh minute goal from Ryan Brobbel was the only score of the game.

Second placed Connah’s Quay Nomads were able to extend their unbeaten run in the league to 15 games, but were frustrated to be held to a 2-2 draw against Colwyn Bay. It could have better if former TNS stalwart Ryan Astles hadn’t have intervened at the death.

Introduced for his debut in the 95th minute he headed home the equaliser for Colwyn Bay from a 97th minute corner. It was a great way to introduce himself to his new teammates and fans.

Two first half goals from Jacob Cook and Callum West had given the Seagulls a mountain to climb after the break and their revival with Jordan Davies’ 13th goal of the season in all competitions.

Davies struck four minutes after the restart and it took another 54 minutes before Astles stooped to add the vital second to clinch a point. The game between Penybont and Caernarfon Town ended as a goalless draw.

In the Play-Off Conference, Cardiff Met’s hopes of building a lead at the top of the table were dashed in a 2-0 home defeat to Haverfordwest County. To make matters worse, veteran striker Adam Roscrow missed a penalty and Toby Raison picked up a straight red card on his debut in the 91st minute.

On the other hand, it was just the boost Tony Pennock’s Bluebirds needed after they ended Phase 1 with a 3-2 home defeat to Briton Ferry Llansawel. Having ridden their luck in the seventh minute when Roscrow missed from the spot, the Pembrokeshire outfit struck twice after the break.

Rhys Abbruzzese got the vital first goal in the 74th minute and Corey Shephard wrapped things up in the fourth minute of added time at the end of the game. The three points moved Pennock’s men to within one point of Cardiff Met and Briton Ferry, who have 28 points each.

The Ferrymen made it three wins in a row as they beat bottom of the table Llanelli Town 3-1. Tom Price gave the home side the lead in the 33rd minute before Danny Williams brought The Reds back on level terms with his sixth goal of the season.

Williams struck a minute into the second half to give Llanelli some hope but Kian Jenkins regained the lead for Briton Ferrry in the 64th minute. Then Sam Snaith came off the bench to pick up his first goal for the Ferrymen to make the game safe in the 72nd minute.

Flint Town United gained ample revenge for their 4-0 home hammering by Bala Town in the last game in Phase 1 as they turned the tables on their neighbours in a thrilling 4-3 win at Maes Tegid.

Lassana Mendes gave Bala a great start with the opening goal in the 11th minute but then game a four goal broadside from the Silkmen in the space of 15 minutes. Darren Stephenson opened the onslaught before Ben Wynne scored twice and Harry Owen added another to make it 4-1 to Flint at the break.

Bala did manage to claw back two goals in the three minutes in the second half through Cameron Ferguson and Liam Higgins, but that was as good as it got for them.
