James Crole Aims to Prove Cymru Premier Goals Can Transform into Newport County Survival

James Crole insists his move to Newport County is the natural next step in a journey shaped by rising standards in the Cymru Premier, as Paul Jones reports.

Creole’s move from Penybont to County completed a double piece of January business for the League Two strugglers who landed both the prolific striker and Cardiff City winger Tanatswa Nyakuhwa.

The 21-year-old Crole has joined Newport on a two-and-a-half-year deal and the striker arrives with an impressive scoring record and a firm belief that his time in the Welsh top flight has prepared him well for the challenge ahead.

Nyakuhwa, meanwhile, has moved across South Wales on loan until the end of the season, giving County another injection of youthful pace and attacking depth.

For Crole, who has scored 11 goals in 19 appearances this season and finished joint top scorer in the Cymru Premier last term with 16, the switch to Rodney Parade represents both a long-awaited opportunity and a chance to challenge perceptions about the Welsh domestic game.

“I'm over the moon,” said the former Cardiff City youngster after signing for the Exiles.

“I feel like it's been a long time coming and I'm happy to get it over the line.

“Hopefully, I can carry on my form. I've had a good start this season and goals is my whole thing - that's what I'm in the team to do and hopefully my form carries on.”

Released by Cardiff after making a single senior appearance in the Carabao Cup, Crole joined Penybont in July 2024 and quickly rebuilt his reputation.

Now, he becomes the latest player to make the step from the Cymru Premier to League Two via Newport, following in the footsteps of James Waite, Nathan Wood, Will Evans, Keenan Patten, Kai Whitmore and Lee Jenkins.

Crole believes those 18 months in the Welsh league have been invaluable, even if the competition is sometimes unfairly dismissed.

“People kind of look down on the Welsh league, but the standards are getting better,” he said.

“It's a very physical league and I've definitely learnt a lot - I've learnt my trade and I've kind of reinvented myself.

“I'm quite a physical player and aggressive player now and I'll bring that into this league.”

That confidence will be welcomed by Newport boss Christian Fuchs as he looks to drag his side away from danger in League Two.
County sit near the foot of the table, but three January additions — Crole, Nyakuhwa and midfielder Harrison Biggins — have added optimism ahead of Saturday’s trip to Gillingham, where all three could make their debuts.

Crole already has familiar faces in the dressing room and believes the environment at Rodney Parade will help him settle quickly.

“I know a few of the lads - I played with Tom Davies at Cardiff for a couple of years - and I've only heard good things,” he added.

“I'm buzzing to be here and I just want to come in and carry on what I've been doing - get some goals, help the boys get us up the table and see where we can go from there.”

Nyakuhwa’s arrival further strengthens Fuchs’ attacking options. The Wales Under-21 international has made nine senior appearances for Cardiff City and is regarded as one of the more exciting prospects to emerge from the Bluebirds’ academy in recent seasons.

A club statement read: “Newport County AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Wales Under-21 international winger Tanatswa Nyakuhwa on loan from League One leaders Cardiff City until the end of this season.

“The Welshman, 20, possesses searing pace and ball trickery. The attacker is seen as one of the many exciting young talents emerging from the Bluebirds Academy and has already made nine first-team appearances for Cardiff.

“Capped at all youth levels by his country, County's loan capture of Nyakuhwa is seen as a measure of the trust the Bluebirds hierarchy have in the football philosophy of Port management duo Christian Fuchs and number two Mark Smith.”

The move marks Nyakuhwa’s first spell away from the Cardiff City Stadium.

He has already found the net at Rodney Parade this season, scoring for Wales Under-21s against Denmark in September, and will now look to translate that impact into League Two.

While Newport have been busy strengthening, they have also confirmed a departure, with defender Habeeb Ogunneye returning to parent club Manchester United after his season-long loan was cut short.

The 20-year-old made 21 appearances in all competitions and scored once, in a 2-1 defeat by MK Dons in August.

A club statement said: “Newport County AFC wish to express their thanks to Habeeb Ogunneye. The defender leaves Gwent with all at County hopeful that the popular player sees a successful future.”
