Fuchs’ side finally tasted success under his leadership, although uncertainty now hangs over the future of key midfielder Sammy Braybrooke.
County’s 2-0 home win over Crewe Alexandra lifted them off the bottom of League Two, ended a run of seven games without a victory in all competitions under the Austrian, and moved the Exiles to within a single point of climbing out of the relegation zone.
For Fuchs, though, the significance of the result lies less in league position and more in the belief he feels is beginning to grow inside the squad.
“I feel very good obviously, very proud, and not only because of that game,” said Fuchs after celebrating his first win at the eighth attempt.
“When you look at the last six games that we played, we have got six points overall and there are a lot of good things happening here.”
Goals from Courtney Baker-Richardson and Braybrooke secured Newport’s first home victory in 289 days, and Fuchs felt his players’ discipline and patience were central to the performance.
“It was a very good performance from the team,” he added. “They stuck together, stayed patient.
“They stuck together, they stayed patient off the ball, they did their job really well and then were always waiting to break them.”
Equally pleasing for the former Leicester City defender was a second consecutive league clean sheet — a rare achievement for Newport this season — following a goalless draw with Barnet just after Christmas.
“Everybody was like, OK, against Barnet, a clean sheet – top, right? And today, you felt it coming somehow and you should not forget we have two clean sheets against teams that are way higher up the table than we are, and we just played really well,” said Fuchs.
“The boys believe in themselves. I think now we've built the confidence, and it's time also now to build the momentum.”
That sense of momentum will be tested immediately, with County travelling to second-placed Bromley on New Year’s Day.
However, preparations for that trip are clouded by uncertainty over the availability of Braybrooke, whose loan from Leicester City expires on December 31 and who could have played his final game for the club against Crewe.
“We will find out very soon,” Fuchs said.
“A player like Sammy Braybrooke obviously is a top player for us and an ambitious player as well. So we'll see what's going to happen. We definitely want him here.”
Braybrooke, a former England youth international, has been a driving force in Newport’s revival, scoring twice in his last three appearances.
While Fuchs made clear how highly he rates the 21-year-old, he was equally keen to stress that the team’s progress cannot hinge on one individual.
“He's such a good player for us, but there are other players that can step up as well. We'll see what the next two days will bring. I'm optimistic until I cannot be any more.
“He's an important part of our team, but you cannot make the performance of the team to one player only.
“We have enough good players whatever way it goes. We would be happy for him to be here, but if that's not the case then we have other players who will fill his shoes.”
There is more optimism surrounding fellow Leicester loanee Nathan Opoku, who made a lively impact from the bench against Crewe and is also out of contract at the end of the year.
“Nathan wants to be here definitely,” said Fuchs.
“I think today he's shown again he comes on and he's right away a threat for the opposition.
“He's just stirring it up and has very good movement off the ball. He's very creative, he's just a threat in behind as well.
“So Nathan, I hope we will see him here again in 2026, a similar situation, it's going to be resolved over the next two days.”
