Anthony Pilkington has been backed to help keep Wigan in the Championship after completing a free transfer move from Cardiff City. The Bluebirds striker has been surplus to manager Neil Warnock’s requirements for some time and has not played a senior game so far this season, despite the team’s struggles in the Premier League. But the 30-year-old winger – who scored 23 goals in 111 appearances for the Bluebirds – has the kind of knowledge and experience Wigan believe can keep them above the relegation zone.

Wigan boss Paul Cook said: “Anthony has good experience in the Championship and Premier League, I am delighted to bring him to Wigan Athletic.

“He won promotion with Cardiff City last season so he knows what it takes to do well at this level and I am sure he will be a big asset to us for the rest of this campaign and beyond.”

Wigan are currently four points above the Championship relegation places and next face Aston Villa at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
