“It definitely feels different in real life than watching it on telly!” Those were the words of Wales’ rising star gymnast Ruby Evans after impressing on her major championship debut. The 16-year-old from Cardiff became the first Welsh gymnast to compete at a senior Artistic World Championships for 17 years – since before she was born.

The 15-year-old women’s artistic gymnast from Cardiff, who attends Ysgol Plasmawr, took silver on vault and bronze on the floor to cap a remarkable first competition as a senior gymnast. Evans’ average of 13.183 on vault secured silver behind Italian Manila Esposito (13.233).
Welsh gymnasts Poppy-Grace Stickler and Ruby Evans have both been selected to represent Great Britain at the first FIG Artistic World Cup series event of 2023 later this month. The event will take place in Cottbus, Germany, from 23-26 February. Clwb Cymru Caerdydd duo Poppy and Ruby will be accompanied on the trip by lead Welsh women’s artistic national coach, Tracey Skirton-Davies.
