Bob Fowden has taken the lead in the JD Competition Tyres Welsh National Tarmacadam Championship after a successful outing on round two, the SMC Stages Rally, held at the Anglesey Racing Circuit. Following eight special stages at the coastal track, it was former rallycross champion Andy Scott who celebrated his first ever overall rally victory in his Ford Fiesta S2000 Turbo. After taking maximum Welsh Championship points on the first round at Caerwent, things didn’t go so well on this occasion for Dave Willett/John Davies, who failed to complete the event after breaking a steering arm on the Ford Escort early in the day.

Joel Makin believes he has made another major breakthrough by beating world No.3 Mohamed ElShorbagy to claim the Manchester Open title. Makin – the Welsh and British No.1 and ranked No.9 in the world – earned one of the most impressive victories of his career to overcome his Egyptian opponent, 3-1, winning 11-7, 5-11, 13-11, 11-4 in 70 minutes. It was a landmark win for the 27-year-old from Pembrokeshire who had lost 3-0 to ElShorbagy the last time they had met at the Squash On Fire Open.

After Birmingham 2022, the next Commonwealth Games will not be hosted by a single city, but by the Australian state of Victoria. It’s a significant move as it opens up the possibility of a collaborative bid from Wales – rather than just Cardiff – as Rob Carbon reports. The door has been opened for Wales to potentially host the Commonwealth Games once again after the 2026 multi-sport event was awarded to the state of Victoria in Australia. The only time the Games has been hosted in Wales was back in 1958. There was a formal bid in the nineties that was unsuccessful, but there has always been a desire to try to repeat the success of the ‘Friendly Games’ of 64 years ago.

Muslim golfers have been enjoying the chance to practice their golf around midnight during the month of Ramadan, thanks to a new Wales Golf initiative. Parc Golf Club between Cardiff and Newport opened up their driving range and short game academy area late at night for the first time to offer the chance for Muslims to break their fast and then practice their golf or learn to play.

Welsh women’s distance running appears to be producing a golden age with Clara Evans the latest athlete to record an amazing performance in the Berlin Half-Marathon. The Cardiff runner stripped more than two minutes off her previous best as she took the tape in 70 mins, 17 sec last weekend to move up to second on the Welsh all-time list behind clubmate Charlotte Arter. It means there are now four Welsh athletes in the top 10 this year in the UK rankings over the 13.1 mile distance and a further two in the top 20.

Dan Jervis set a new personal best and was only 0.10 seconds outside the consideration time for this summer’s World Championships as he cruised to the men’s 400m freestyle title at the British Swimming Championships in Sheffield. The Swansea University swimmer – who reached the 1500m final at his first Olympics in Tokyo last year – stormed clear of the field after 100m and never looked like relinquishing his lead as he finished 2.08 seconds ahead of runner-up Luke Turley (Bath National Centre). Another Welsh swimmer, Kieran Bird, – who also swam for Great Britain in Tokyo – from the Bath National Centre, was the bronze medallist.
