Matthew Hirst has won the 2022 Motorsport UK Pirelli Ravenol Welsh Rally Championship title with a perfect 150 points score after winning the penultimate round of the series, the Wyedean Stages Rally. It’s the second time that Hirst and co-driver Declan Dear have been Welsh champions, having won the title in 2019. Driving his Pirelli-shod Delta Salvage Ford Fiesta R5+, Hirst scored maximum points on the opening four rounds of the series – the WKD Trained Dogs Rally North Wales in March, April’s Rallynuts Stages Rally, the Plains Rally in mid-May and the Nicky Grist Stages at the start of July – leaving him only needing one more good result to secure the title.

Now, a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold event, the Cardiff Cross Challenge attracts an even more diverse range of athletic talent than ever before.
Colin Ingram has said he wants to help Glamorgan win promotion next season after signing a new two-year deal with the county. The South African batsman – who will be 39 years old when the new contract ends – will be one of three overseas players at the club next season, alongside Australians Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser with two of the three players available to be selected for each match. In the games in which he figured this year, Ingram was in excellent form, scoring 596 first-class runs in just five matches, with three centuries.
Cardiff Cross Challenge celebrates its 25th anniversary on Saturday by welcoming a global entry to Llandaff Fields. The event, which see world class athletes compete alongside local club runners, kicks off the prestigious World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold season. This has been the year of women on the water throughout Wales, thanks to the success of the #ShePaddles campaign. It reached its high tide mark back in May, when 75 women – the vast majority of whom had never met each other – took part in a paddlesport festival at the Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre, in Snowdonia. “Plas y Brenin had never had 75 people on the water at once before, never mind 75 women,” says Lydia Wilford, development officer at Canoe Wales.

Ryan Day has labelled his British Open snooker title triumph as the best performance of his career. The Welshman took the final four frames to defeat Mark Allen 10-7 after what was an incredibly tense affair to win the 2022 British Open. Coming into this showpiece encounter, Allen was the pre-match favourite, having easily turned over Noppon Saengkham in the semi-finals.
It was a double win for Kenya at the Wizz Air Cardiff Half Marathon as Geoffrey Koech and Beatrice Cheserek stormed to victories in the men’s and women’s races in the Welsh capital. The African duo headed a field that included more than 20,000 entrants on the same day as the London Marathon took place. Hopes were high that the 29-year-old Koech might threaten the course record of 59 mis, 30 sec set by fellow Kenyan Leonard Langat in 2019, but in the end he had to content himself with his fourth fastest half-marathon time of 60:01as he just failed to break the magical hour mark.
