Geraint Thomas will spearhead a Welsh contingent of nine riders named in the extended Great Britain squads for the Cycling Road World Championships in Glasgow. Wales’ former Tour der France winner Thomas is joined by Owain Doull, Luke Rowe, Josh Tarling, Ethan Vernon, Elynor Backstedt, Elinor Barker, Carys Lloyd and Luke Jones for the road and para road events that take place between August 3 to 13. The road and time-trial events form part of an 11-day programme of 13 world championship events taking place in Glasgow and across Scotland, from 3-13 August, with 8,000 riders competing and 190 UCI World Champions to be crowned.

Team Wales Commonwealth Games star Elizabeth Popova marked her first Rhythmic British Championships as a senior gymnast with a five-medal haul in Telford. Popova took bronze in the senior all-around competition on Saturday, scoring 103.950 overall across her four pieces of apparatus, which included 27.500 with the hoop, 27.700 with ball, 26.050 with clubs and 22.700 with the ribbon.

Co-driven by Declan Dear, Hirst won the Nicky Grist Stages Interclub event last year and will be looking to close in on the MRF Tyres BTRDA Gold Star Series lead (he currently lies third, just four points behind the leader) and also extend his advantage at the top of the Motorsport UK Pirelli Welsh Rally Championship points table.
Commonwealth Games women’s artistic gymnast Jea Maracha has announced her retirement from elite competition. Maracha began her journey in the sport aged five at Phoenix Gymnastics Cardiff. She was first taken into the British Performance Pathway Development Squad in 2016, following her 10th place finish at the 2015 British Championships – when she was still only 10.
