Zan Vipotnik Aims to Try Golden Boot for Size After Reaching 20 Championship Goals

Zan Vipotnik has admitted the Championship Golden Boot is firmly in his sights after reaching 20 goals for the season.

But the striker has also insisted Swansea City’s dramatic comeback at Bramall Lane underlined the importance of collective effort over individual accolades, as the team look ahead to hosting promotion-chasing Middlesbrough on Monday evening.

The Slovenian striker struck from the penalty spot to cancel out Gustavo Hamer’s opener against Sheffield United, bringing up his landmark tally before a chaotic second half saw Swansea battle back from 3-1 down to earn a 3-3 draw.

Despite the personal milestone, Vipotnik made it clear his ambitions are tied closely to the team’s fortunes – even as he acknowledged his desire to finish as the division’s top scorer.

"It's nice to help the team with the goal, it's the first penalty I've scored this season. I'm glad we could get the point in front of the travelling fans," said Vipotnik.

"Our fans, they always travel in big numbers and the journey from Swansea is very long, I hope they enjoyed the result.

"We showed the mentality, we were two goals down in the second half, then the substitutes really changed the game positively.

"Adam scoring and getting an assist was amazing, then Jisung getting that all important equaliser at the end. A really positive message for everyone on the pitch and off the pitch that we can always fight back.

"If I'm honest, I would say the Golden Boot is on my mind, but I know how the league is. There's not many games left to go and anything can change, I just want to keep taking it game by game and keep helping the team."

Swansea looked set for defeat after Harrison Burrows restored Sheffield United’s lead and Tom Cannon extended it, but a raft of substitutions transformed the contest.

Jay Fulton set up Adam Idah to reduce the deficit before the Irish forward turned provider, teeing up Jisung Eom for a late equaliser that stunned the hosts and secured a valuable point.

While Vipotnik grabbed headlines for reaching the 20-goal mark, Idah’s return from injury proved equally significant in shifting momentum.

The 25-year-old, who arrived from Celtic last summer in a club-record deal outside the Premier League, has endured a frustrating debut campaign plagued by fitness setbacks and off-field challenges.

"Not many people know, I fractured my foot when I just signed, so that was tough," the forward told BBC Sport Wales.

"And then obviously with the hamstring, it's not been the easiest of journeys so far here, but I'm enjoying it now and it's great to be back."

The Republic of Ireland international also revealed the difficulties he faced settling in south Wales after his move, having struggled to secure accommodation while recovering from injury.

"It was a tough period. It wasn't easy when I first came. I couldn't get a house for months and I think they are the things that people don't understand," he said.

"There's a lot of things going on behind the scenes with footballers and I struggled with that, not being able to live somewhere, living in a hotel and moving from Airbnb to Airbnb.

"It was a difficult period and with the injuries it's not nice.

"But to be fair this club is like a family club, everyone helped me through it and thankfully I'm back now."

Idah had missed 17 consecutive league matches with a hamstring problem but made an instant impact on his return, scoring within minutes of coming off the bench and adding an assist to cap a standout cameo.

"It was a nice way to come back for my first game in a long time. It's a credit to everyone that helped me come back," he added.

"It was frustrating being out for quite a while, and the international games last week, it was nice to get some minutes there.

"Obviously they were not great with the results but to come back and play for Swansea and be back with the boys again was brilliant, and then to top it off with a goal and an assist was nice."

The draw leaves Swansea 16th in the Championship table, 11 points adrift of the play-off places and 13 clear of the relegation zone with six games remaining.

While a late push for the top six appears unlikely, Vipotnik’s goalscoring form offers a personal subplot in the closing weeks of the campaign — with the striker openly chasing the Golden Boot as he looks to cap an impressive debut season in English football.
