Brian Barry-Murphy Desperate for Cardiff City Pair to Return

Brian Barry-Murphy is hoping Cardiff City’s top scorer Yousef Salech and the inspirational Rubin Colwill can prove their fitness over the weekend.

The Bluebirds boss is very keen that both players are able to return to action at Peterborough on Easter Monday.

Barry-Murphy has seen his side lose three times and draw three other times in the 12 games Salech has missed after picking up a neck injury.

He also had to play for months without Colwill as he underwent surgery, yet the head coach still finds his side 11 points clear of third-place Bolton Wanderers in the race for promotion.
Lincoln City lead by seven points with seven matches to go.

Peterborough have climbed to 12th since former Swansea City manager Luke Williams took over.

His first game in charge on 1 November was an FA Cup triumph over the Bluebirds.

Having failed to score in their last two matches Cardiff need the fire power of Salech back in their side. He has scored 12 goals in 27 league outings to date this season.

“Having Yousef back in training is great for us all, it's given us all a big lift to have him back and to recover from such a serious injury,” said Barry-Murphy.

“But he has been out for a very long time with a very serious injury and he's still going through the process of making sure that he's okay in all the different aspects that he has to get through before we’re really confident that he can be involved in the squad.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve been keeping Yousef in cotton wool. He had an extremely serious injury the likes of which hadn’t been seen in football a lot.

“He’s had his first exposure to heading the football this week, and then heading the ball opposed, which is something he tends to get a lot of.

“He still has some stiffness getting used to that because he hasn’t done it for so long.

“Once we are pretty clear that he’s back to a situation where he can train pretty much as normal and have no pain, then he’ll be good to go.

“He’s very close and he’s a very important player for us and we’d want him to be available as much as possible.”

Colwill missed Wales two World Cup qualifying matches due to a grumbling hamstring problem and centre back Dylan Lawlor picked up a toe injury.

Barry-Murphy needs all his top guns back in harness as soon as possible to maintain the pressure on Lincoln in the title race and to clinch the final few points needed to secure an immediate return to the Championship.

“There are many stages this season when we’ve missed players. Perry Ng had a prolonged period out, as with Ollie Tanner and Rubin,” he added.

“Now it’s Yousef, who is a very good and skilful player who gives us something different when he plays. The players have done fantastically well throughout all those players’ absences.

“Rubin didn’t feel comfortable with how he felt in the Wales camp. He’s obviously a very important player for us in many different ways, so to get him back without being seriously injured was great for us.

“Now we just hope we can get him in a position, as with Yousef, to be fit to play and contribute to the team.

“During the course of a season there are going to be all sorts of periods of good and bad results – or some you wished could have been better.

“The players have done brilliantly to put is in a position where we can now look forward to what could be an incredible end to the season. Our job is to go and try and achieve it.

“If it was easy, then anyone could do it. I do feel because of how well the players have done over the course of the season it’s easy to forget where we have come from.

“That’s why we should be so grateful for what they’ve done and push them as hard as we can to try and achieve what would be an incredible feat.”
