Zak Vyner’s long-standing admiration for Wrexham from a distance has become close range after the defender completed a move from Bristol City.

The centre-back has admitted the Dragons’ ambition and rapid rise had caught his eye well before he arrived.

Now, Vyner, 28, has joined Wrexham for an undisclosed fee, becoming their first signing of the winter window as Phil Parkinson’s side push for a Championship play-off place.

Vyner was absent from Bristol City’s squad for their 5-0 defeat to Derby County on Friday night, with his contract at Ashton Gate due to expire in the summer.

On sealing the switch, Vyner said: "I'm over the moon. Wrexham's ambition and the project that is already well under way – the back-to-back-to-back promotions – is something you can't help but admire from afar and now I'm involved I can't wait to help out."

The former Bristol City academy product has committed his future to Wrexham until the end of the 2028-29 season, with the club also holding an option to extend by a further 12 months.

After spending his entire professional career with the Robins, Vyner arrives with vast Championship experience, having made more than 260 appearances at that level.

"I know a few of the lads, I know what the squad is and how good it is, and for me now it is about showing some leadership, helping out with my attributes and what I've learned in the last ten years and helping an already good squad be better," added Vyner.

Vyner joined Bristol City’s academy at the age of 10 and made his senior debut in 2016.

Loan spells with Accrington Stanley, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham United and Aberdeen followed before he established himself as a key figure for the Robins from the 2020-21 season onwards.

Wrexham had monitored his progress closely and had already tried to secure his signature in the summer.

The move comes shortly after Wrexham allowed former England international Conor Coady to join Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the campaign, creating space in the squad for Vyner’s arrival.

Parkinson believes the defender’s versatility and experience will be a major asset.

"Zak's a really good Championship player, he can play across the back three and in midfield," said Parkinson.

"With Conor going to Charlton, we knew Zak's contract was up in the summer and we've been having talks with Bristol City for a while.

“He's a really good signing for us.

"We've followed his progress, we tried to get him in the summer. He's a great addition to the group.

"The squad strength is so important. A few players have moved on and we had some spaces to fill. Zak comes in and adds a lot of quality to the team."

Vyner’s arrival capped a positive weekend for Wrexham on the pitch, as they returned to the play-off places with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Sam Smith’s fourth goal in six Championship games proved decisive, coming after Derby’s heavy win over Bristol City had reshuffled the table.

Reflecting on that result, Parkinson said his side had to dig deep to secure the points.

“These games are never straightforward. I spoke to the lads yesterday about games over the last four years that we’ve had in similar circumstances where we’ve gone to teams who are at the bottom of the table and nearly all the games have had a similar feel to them.

“I’m very pleased because we had to display some real quality to get the win today and that moment of quality came with a great move down the right-hand side. It was a great cross from Issa (Kabore) and Sam did what he does in the six-yard box.

“In the first half, Wednesday dropped quickly into that low block and sometimes it can be difficult to break down, you have got to show patience which I felt we did.

“There were some really key moments for us, Matty (James) with his clearance off the line at one end in particular.

“We really had to earn the three points today. We had our chances but so did Sheffield Wednesday who are playing with real pride and we came here with total respect for them. We had to stay really focused at the back to see the game out.”
