Phil Parkinson Relaxed on Next Wrexham Deals as Window Starts to Close

Phil Parkinson insists any further business before the January transfer deadline would be a “bonus” for Wrexham.

That stance underlines the manager’s satisfaction with the group already at his disposal as the club continues to defy expectations in their first Championship season.

The Red Dragons sit seventh after 29 games, with 44 points earned following a remarkable rise that has taken them from the fifth tier to the second tier in just three years.

Their push for the play-offs has been fuelled by strong away form, highlighted last weekend by a dramatic 3-2 comeback win at Queens Park Rangers, sealed by a Josh Windass equaliser in the 93rd minute and an even later long-range winner from Oliver Rathbone.

Despite that momentum, Parkinson played down the need for late additions, even with Wrexham having been linked with a host of forwards during the window.

"Players are always linked with us," he said. "We've been streamlining the squad and that work is ongoing.

"If someone comes in, it will be a bonus.

"As I've said before, there's certain players out there we're looking at and negotiations sometimes take longer than you'd ideally like for several different reasons.

"If someone comes in great, if it doesn't [materialise] then I'm pleased with what we've got."

Wrexham have not made a signing since the turn of the year, having already recruited heavily in the summer, and recent weeks have instead seen the squad trimmed.

Jake Bickerstaff and James McClean left on permanent deals, while Conor Coady and Andy Cannon both departed on loan.

"The 25-man squad's got to be named at the back end of next week so we're trying to avoid a situation where players are here and not in that squad," Parkinson said.

"The lads who've gone out so far, Andy Cannon needed to get some minutes.

"We could have got Andy in the 25 perhaps, and he would have been a valuable addition to that, but for his own career he had to go somewhere where he felt he was going to play.

"Conor Coady's gone to Charlton. Conor wanted to get some minutes between now and the end of the season and Charlton have offered him that opportunity."

One departure now confirmed is club legend Paul Mullin, who has joined Bradford City on loan for the remainder of the season as the League One promotion hopefuls look to strengthen their attack.

Mullin, whose goals were instrumental in Wrexham’s climb from the National League to the Championship, is seeking a fresh start after limited opportunities in north Wales this term.

Speaking after completing the move to Valley Parade, Mullin said:
"I love success and being around successful people - coming here offers exactly that. There is an expectation from the fans which is big - that it is something which suits me.”

Bradford have also bolstered their forward line by signing Kayden Jackson from Derby County on a permanent deal, while Wrexham press on with their focus firmly on results rather than recruitment.

Parkinson’s side head to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday aiming to protect their top-six position, knowing that any late transfer activity would merely be an added extra rather than a necessity.
