Wrexham FC dare not lose their Vanarama National League clash with Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road this afternoon (3pm).
Defeat could end their play-off hopes if other results go against them and manager Andy Davies says: “Our team performance against Dagenham a week ago was up there with our best of the season, but we didn’t take the points.
“We’ve taken heart from the performance, but everybody knows how important the games are now.”
Wrexham slipped out of the play-off places after Ebbsfleet earned a 1-0 midweek win at Eastleigh and moved above the Welsh team.
The loss of form since manager Dean Keates left Wrexham to take over his home town club Walsall has been dramatic. The Dragons, suffering three defeats in their last four matches and earning only six points from a possible 21 since Davies took over in their worst run of the season.
But they can still rescue the situation by winning their last two fixtures of the regular season, against Orient away and Fylde at home.
“They are all big games now,” says striker Scott Quigley, who has scored seven goals in 15 appearances since going Wrexham on loan from Blackpool.
“The fans were absolutely superb against Dagenham and it was really disappointing we couldn’t give something back to them again.
“We are bringing in 4,000 spectators at home which is brilliant. The fans are always behind us, even when we’ve lost, and they could have booed us off.
“They haven’t and all you could hear was them singing at the end.
“It is great to know they are still with us, but it is our time to repay them now for keep coming and not getting anything from the game. It is all up to us now.”
Wrexham have been missing leading scorer Chris Holroyd for the past two games because of a toe injury, while Kevin Roberts returns after completing a three-game suspension.
Orient have former Newport County manager Justin Edinburgh in charge of their team. The Londoners were on a good run of form – five without defeat – until they were stopped in their tracks by Hartlepool on Tuesday.
Louis Laing’s goal sealed a 1-0 win for ‘Pools to end their run of five games without defeat.
Top scorer Macaulay Bonne is Orient’s danger man and he is the third top goal scorer in the National League with 20 goals.
