Whisper it Quietly, But Wrexham are Starting to Believe in Another Hollywood Ending

It’s early days, but having got used to Championship football, some at Wrexham are even starting to talk about PTTPL, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

Max Cleworth joined the ever-increasing list of Wrexham players to speak openly about his side's chances of achieving something special this season – promotion to the Premier League.

The defender got the slightest of touches on Nathan Broadhead's shot to guide the ball into the net and earn the Red Dragons a point against Blackburn last time out.

The draw at the Stok Cae Ras ensured Wrexham stretched their unbeaten league run to eight matches and leaves Phil Parkinson's side just three points adrift of the Championship's top six ahead of this weekend's clash with Preston North End at Deepdale.

And while the likes of Kieffer Moore and Dan Scarr had also previously spoken positively about the club's chances of being in contention to secure an unprecedented fourth successive promotion in the latter stages of the campaign, what actually are the chances of Wrexham achieving something truly extraordinary this season?

In the aftermath of the draw with Rovers, boss Parkinson spoke about the need for his troops to keep themselves in contention going into the New Year.

"It's great to be up and around it. Can we keep chipping away? Can we get into January in a challenging position?" he said.

"We're just going to keep working hard as a group and we'll see where that takes us."

They face Preston - currently fifth in the table - twice in December in addition to travelling to seventh-placed Hull City - highlighting the testing nature of the upcoming run.

Elsewhere, Wrexham host a decent enough Watford side and a resurgent Sheffield United - with the other fixture being a second Welsh derby of the campaign at struggling Swansea City.

In short, it will take a strong effort in the final month of 2025 for Wrexham to go into January either in, or on the cusp of, the top six spots.

That said, should they stay in the mix, the winter transfer window could well be utilised - as it was successfully last time out - to turbo-charge their efforts for the second half of the campaign.

The likes of Danny Ward, Jay Rodriguez and Andy Cannon are all closer to returning from the treatment table, while summer additions such as Liberato Cacace and Issa Kabore will hope to kick on when available after their own injury struggles.

Some fringe players, such as striker Ryan Hardie and defender Conor Coady may well attract interest from elsewhere, but there is no doubt Wrexham will be keeping a close eye on the market in a bid to sprinkle more stardust on an already strong second tier squad should they find the right fit for the team.

Much may depend on injuries, with Kabore's situation in particular being one that will be closely monitored heading into the New Year.

But there is no doubting that departures appear more inevitable than incomings given that the club recruited 13 players in the summer.

None of the current top six are receiving parachute payments at present, highlighting how wide open the Championship is this season.

Sheffield United and Southampton have both improved of late following sluggish starts to the season, and few would bet against either those sides at the very least knocking on the door of the play-off spots come the end of the regular season - while Birmingham City, among others, have the spending power to recruit in January.

So, while there is a huge amount to be positive about at the Stok Cae Ras heading into the final stretch in 2025, Parkinson knows better than most that there is still a hefty amount of work to be done, both on and off the pitch.

But if anyone knows the benefit of dreaming under their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, it's Wrexham supporters.

Their prayers have been answered before when it comes to promotion, so it is understandable if their faith remains strong as we head towards 2026.

A fourth successive promotion – and one to the Premier League – would be the ultimate Hollywood ending.
