Former Newport County striker Tom Meechan has signed for Southern League Premier Division club Merthyr Town.
Qualified maths teacher Meechan has also played for Hungerford Town, St Ives Town and St Neots Town, while he netted 53 goals for Thurlow Nunn League Godmanchester Rovers in 2014-15.
“Scoring goals is my main asset,” said former University of Birmingham sports and exercise science student Meechan.
After finishing his degree, Meechan did a conversion course to become a high school maths teacher in Cambridgeshire.
The 27-year-old Meechan, born in Cambridge, has scored well over 100 league goals during his career and will play a major role in Merthyr’s bid to challenge for a play-offs finish in 2018-19.
Manager Gavin Williams said: “I am delighted that Tom has agreed to join us.
“He knows the Southern League well, is a proven goalscorer at this level and will strengthen the squad.”
Meechan follows Kieran Lewis and goalkeeper Joe Perry as new signings ahead of the coming season.
While the striker confirmed he will play for the Martyrs, Owain Jones has left the club to join full-time Nuneaton Town.
Jones joined the club in 2018 and scored four goals in 12 appearances.
“Owain came to us to play regular football to try and get back into full-time football,: said Williams.
“He earned this opportunity with Nuneaton and needs to take it.
“Without contracts it is always likely that clubs will come along and cherry pick the players that they want to take. It has happened a number of times during my time at the club.
“It’s hard to build a team to move forward when that happens, but I understand that this is the way it is with football at this level.
“Owain has been great during his time here and I hope it works out for him.”
Merthyr’s opening pre-season match is against Cambrian and Clydach away on Tuesday, July 10, while they are at home against City of Liverpool FC on Saturday, July 14 and then Carmarthen Town two days later.
The game against Liverpool will also form part of the MTFC Supporters Society birthday party celebrations.
