The Dragons Earn Fourth Successive Win And Top Table

Wrexham are top of Vanarama National League football after securing a fourth successive victory, beating Boreham Wood 2-0.

Manager Bryan Hughes’ team won the rearranged fixture, which was Wrexham’s game in hand, and jumped above Solihull Moors, who had been top.

“I’m delighted, absolutely delighted,” said Hughes.

“It wasn’t a fantastic performance by us, but we did what we needed to do.

“These players deserve all the credit. I am just guiding them in the right direction. We are top of the league with 12 games to go and we’ll just enjoy it.”

Second half goals from winger Ben Tollitt, who is on loan from Tranmere Rovers, delighted almost 250 Wrexham fans who made the trip to Hertfordshire.

The next National League fixture for Wrexham is a third successive away match, against Gateshead at their International Stadium home ground on Saturday.

There were a couple of injuries to Wrexham players. Mark Carrington needed treatment when he went down as a corner was taken, while Kieran Kennedy was already in the away dugout getting a cut to his head looked at.

Nicky Deverdics took over swabbing duties with physio Phil Davies needed on the pitch.

Both Carrington and Kennedy played on and completed the 90 minutes.

Wrexham went close when Luke Young crossed to the back post and Carrington’s header was tipped away by goalkeeper Ray Hubbart.

On the stroke of half-time, Brad Walker kept possession through two challenges and then unleashed a fierce shot from 18-yards that was deflected just wide.

When the right-wing corner was taken, Kennedy’s firm header was bundled round a post by Hubbart.

Wrexham’s first goal came when Jason Oswell attacked and the ball was half cleared. It broke kindly for Tollitt to pick his spot from 10-yards.

The Scouser was straight across to Wrexham fans at that end to celebrate in some style.

A second goal was scored on 64 minutes and Tollitt was again the marksman. Oswell was again involved and his pass out to the left gave Tollitt the time and space to finish in composed style.

Wright’s powerful run down the left ended with a pull back for Oswell, but his shot flew over the bar when it seemed he had to score.

At the other end goalkeeper Rob Lainton denied Boreham Wood’s Sorba Thomas with an outstanding when he ran through one-on-one.

The Dragons headed home delighted with the three points and Lainton’s clean sheet in a match which maintains their title challenge.
