Phase one of the 2025-26 JD Cymru Premier has concluded, and it's now full steam ahead for the beginning of phase two, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

The New Saints, Connah's Quay, Penybont, Caernarfon Town, Barry Town United and Colwyn Bay will battle it out in the Championship Conference.

Cardiff Met, Briton Ferry, Haverfordwest County, Bala Town, Flint Town United and Llanelli Town are the six sides who will spend the second half of the season in the Plate Conference.

DragonSports looks at some of the key storylines to look out for over the coming months.

Ferguson gives Bala hope

Little more than 24 hours before the final round of phase one fixtures commenced, Bala announced the signing of striker Cameron Ferguson.

The 22-year-old wasted no time in making his mark for the Lakesiders as he netted two goals and registered an assist in the opening half alone as his new club thrashed his former employers Flint 4-0 at the Essity Stadium.

Crucially, the victory ensured Bala rose above the Silkmen and out of the bottom two.

After an encouraging start to the Cymru Premier campaign, Steve Fisher's side swiftly slipped down the table and went into the clash with Flint having won just once in 12 league matches.

But with Ferguson, son of Everton legend Duncan Ferguson, starting his Bala career in such dream fashion, the 2025-26 season could yet be salvageable amid concerns over relegation, particularly given that the Maes Tegid outfit sit just five points adrift of seventh. More on that to come...

It's Wilde, Wilde, Wilde for Bay

On the back of edging out Airbus UK to top spot in what was an enthralling 2024-25 Cymru North title race, it was difficult to predict how Colwyn Bay would fare in the top-flight.

But the Seagulls have been the surprise package of the season so far and, despite losing 1-0 to his former club The New Saints on matchday 22, boss Mike Wilde led Bay to a top six finish at the split.

They averaged an impressive 1.36 points per game in phase one and conceded just 25 goals across their 22 league fixtures - with only leaders TNS (19) letting in fewer over that period.

Bay became the first newly-promoted side to finish in the top half since Caernarfon did so in 2018-19, and it does of course mean that they will participate in the European play-offs in just over three months.

"The overriding feeling is one of pride, of every single player in there and the objective has now been achieved – to get Welsh Prem status for next season," Wilde told Sgorio.

"Now we’ve done that, and to be perfectly honest, we’ve done it with another 10 games to go."

A Disney tale for the Nomads

John Disney made more than 300 appearances as a player for Connah's Quay but made the bold leap to the dugout ahead of the current campaign.

Having missed out on a top six finish last term, the pressure was on Disney and his troops this time around.

The Nomads had some ups and downs in the opening weeks of the campaign but, once they hit their stride, the 2019-20 and 2020-21 champions were simply magnificent.

They were unbeaten in 14 league games at the end of phase one and had won eight Cymru Premier fixtures on the spin prior to drawing 2-2 with Caernarfon on the final day.

It all ensured they finished phase one in second, just six points behind TNS and nine clear of third-placed Penybont.

A return to Europe is now the prime target for Disney.

"The expectation has to be to try and finish as high as we possibly can," he told Sgorio after the league split.

"We've got 10 games. Our points tally says that we get two points per game, and if we can get two points per game from the last 10, I'll be absolutely delighted."

Ambitious Cofis making their mark

Their time at the summit of the table earlier this season may seem like a distant memory for the Caernarfon faithful.

But there is still an enormous amount for the Canaries to play for in 2025-26, and beyond.

Richard Davies has guided his side to the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup - where they will face Colwyn Bay in what promises to be an eye-catching fixture on the north Wales coast.

They also ended phase one in fourth place with 34 points from their 22 games, their joint-highest ever points tally in the first segment of the season.

"We're still in the Welsh Cup and what being in the top six does, it guarantees you a play-off.

We've done well in them in the last two years. There's a lot to play for," Davies told Sgorio ahead of phase two.

The renovation of The Oval is edging ever closer to being completed while Caernarfon sealed one of the most headline-grabbing signings of the league's recent history by recruiting Aston Villa youth product Brad Young following his return to the UK from Saudi Arabia.

Having recently outlined their aim to become the best semi-professional team in Wales by 2030, the Cofi Army have every right to feel positive about the direction of their club at present.

The race for seventh

With the title race once again feeling like something of a foregone conclusion after the Saints recovered from a stuttering start, fans may be forgiven for feeling there is not too much at stake in phase two.

Those same supporters can lick their lips at the prospect of watching the race for seventh unfold.

Having collected just eight of the 66 points on offer in phase one, Llanelli sit rock bottom and need an absolute miracle to avoid the drop this season.

But the remaining five sides in the bottom tier have absolutely everything to play for, with just seven points separating them ahead of the final 10 games of the regular season.

Haverfordwest showed signs of improvement late on in phase one while Briton Ferry ended with two encouraging wins following a woeful run of just one victory in 11 games across all competitions.

Then there is Cardiff Met who, after narrowly beating Llanelli in early December, failed to win any of their final four league games of phase one and were also knocked out of the Welsh Cup by Caernarfon.

With a play-off spot and relegation on the line, the Plate Conference quite simply looks mouth-watering.
