Swansea City Reveal Snoop Dogg and Luka Modric Plan for Blast Off

Almost a year after Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan's ownership of Swansea City came to an end, the club's new goals have been emphatically outlined, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

And for the Swans, it's time to "move the dial".

The club's chief executive officer Tom Gorringe provided a fascinating insight into a range of club matters when speaking to the Business of Sport podcast this week.

It swiftly became clear - if it wasn't already - that Swansea are determined to increase their revenue streams in a bid to have greater funds to invest into the first team and pathway.

"If we don't adapt, the club will stagnate and eventually decline so we have to be able to generate incomes that surpass what we can do locally," as Gorringe put it.

This is all the more pressing given that it is already brutally difficult for Swansea to compete with clubs in receipt of parachute payments - while teams such as Birmingham City and Wrexham have come up from League One and deployed the kind of spending power that has been so against the norm for a side coming up from the third tier.

So it goes without saying, in football, quickly and massively increasing revenue is far from simple.

Gorringe stated the Swans earned a total of £2.4m from sponsorship last season, a figure that is dwarfed by the £10m he claimed Wrexham will earn solely from their front of shirt sponsorship this season.

Upon his arrival at the club in February, then as chief operating officer, Gorringe undertook a sixth-month long operational review of the club - with the key outcome being that the club will save £3.9m year on year.

This came as a result of numerous changes, including staffing, although one revelation highlighted some of the concerns that had emerged as a result of the review.

Gorringe said the club had a contract with an external firm worth an eye-watering £300,000 for the windows at their Swansea.com Stadium's home to be cleaned.

It led to the CEO delivering the headline-grabbing quip that he "would rather have dirty windows and get promoted".

In short, the purse strings have had to be tightened in places.

But as for expansion in the future, work has long been under way.

The enormous social media following of investors Snoop Dogg and Luka Modric has already been successfully utilised, while the respective nous of the high-profile duo played a pivotal role in the club's recruitment over the summer.

Their powerhouse investors are also opening other doors too.

"The sponsors we're speaking to now, we would never have been able to access before," said Gorringe.

"We've had offers for deals that in one sponsorship arrangement would be more than our total commercial income for the last year."

Snoop Dogg himself is set to have his own suite at the Swansea.com Stadium - which will be used for guests and content creation.

The social media impact will unquestionably be key to the club with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Croatia legend Modric on board, hence Swansea's eagerness to expand their media output - with inside access to training sessions and pre-match meetings among the aspects they want to provide supporters with insight to more regularly.

In terms of retail revenue, Gorringe said the club enjoyed a record three months - even prior to the Legends and Death Row Records clothing range collaboration being announced.

The stadium itself is also key to their plans, with Swansea aiming to submit proposals to the council for a new fanzone at the south of the stadium over the coming months.

Gorringe also confirmed the club are currently in talks with the local council over the possibility of buying the stadium.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but the progress off the pitch is clear for all to see. And it leaves Gorringe feeling Swansea are on the right track.

Crucially, the Jack Army will have been thrilled to hear a key figure at the club passionately stating such a strong desire to improve - with the clear communication on such a variety of aspects being strikingly refreshing.

Long may it continue, as the chances of success will only increase.
