The rivalry between WPL managers Andy Morrison and Colin Caton is heating up after their respective sides clashed at the Deeside Stadium last weekend.
Both Connah’s Quay and Bala Town are expected to be in contention for European places come the end of the season and Connah’s Quay claimed an early head-start, beating the Lakesiders by a single goal.
Speaking post-match Any Morrison was less than complimentary about Bala’s approach to the game whilst Colin Caton was left dubious after an electric problem in the away team changing room forced him to conduct his half-time team talk out on the pitch.
Andy Morrison was not impressed with how his opposite number had set his side up and felt that the second-half substitution of Bala centre-forward Les Davies – a Nomads player until this summer – was the turning point of the game.
“We’ve had to stand up to a barrage of long balls, they just boot the ball from back to front and try and hit Les Davies,” he told Sgorio. “To be fair, I felt that when Les went off the pitch we’d win the game because he was the main threat and when you boot balls in the box you need someone 6 foot 4, so I was over the moon when Les left,” he told Sgorio following the game.
Caton dispelled the notion that his side were one-dimensional in their approach and felt his Bala team were unfortunate to have been beaten.
“I thought we totally dominated the game tonight, we were the only team who were looking to score on the floor and the only team that was trying to score in open play, but I’m proud of the lads tonight. We’ve done really well, we just needed to be a little better in the attacking third and a be a little bit more creative. I’m really happy with them, I don’t think they’ve troubled us once. Ashley (Morris) hasn’t made one save,” claimed Caton, who then questioned why the away team changing room was without any light.
“We didn’t have any lights in the dressing room before the game and we didn’t have any lights in the dressing room at half-time,” he explained. “We had to sit on the pitch and do our team talk, we didn’t have any drinks or anything so it was quite strange that every other light in the building was working and every other light in the stadium was working, but our dressing room didn’t work and there was a fuse blown.
“They had 45 minutes to get it right before the game and they still didn’t do it for us half-time. Maybe it’s just one fault in one building but it’s very strange,” he added.
This is likely to be the first of four league meetings between the two sides over the course of the season and it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out when the two sides meet in the reverse fixture at Maes Tegid in early November.
With both clubs pushing to assert themselves at the top of the table, the rivalry between the two sides is almost certain to become more intense as the season progresses.
