Rhyl players are preparing for their home match against Holyhead Hotspur on Saturday while they await an investigation into a brawl during their midweek friendly against Leeds United.
Huws Gray Alliance club Rhyl have launched an investigation after the fixture against Leeds under-23s was abandoned in the second half.
Video footage appeared online showing a melee involving both sides with punches being thrown, mainly by Rhyl’s number four, named as Tony Davies on the teamsheet.
Leeds were reported to have then left the field and the game was called off with the game goalless.
A statement on Rhy’s website said: “Following the abandonment of the friendly match between Rhyl FC and a Leeds United XI the club will now launch an internal investigation into the incidents which resulted in the match being halted during the second half.
“The club will issue no further statement until the completion of this work.”
The Football Association of Wales also said they will also be investigating what happened.
Leeds coach Carlos Corberan defended his players, saying: “We will always represent Leeds with the correct behaviours and values respecting the opponent and the football rules.
“[I’m] proud of the players in the way they conducted themselves.”
Hundreds of Rhyl fans gave their views via social media and some said they are ashamed of their club with others sharing their disgust and calling for some players to be sacked.
The game, played at Corbett Sports Stadium was not officially abandoned, but Corberan withdrew his players saying he was safeguarding his players.
“Disgraceful behaviour from @rhylfc in front of their @RhylAcademyFC kids,” tweeted one supporter. “You’re supposed to be role models. Set an example! Don’t invite young kids to see this. So much for building bridges between the first team and the academy, not impressed.”
A Facebook message said: “The behaviour was unacceptable and on the street would be deemed assault.
“This is not the right image to portray to young children watching. This will now affect future revenue streams to the club as professional clubs will not come to play Rhyl.”
