Penydarren BGC have muscled in on a JD Sports Welsh Cup party.

Manager Kerry Mullin and his team from the fifth tier of Welsh football have achieved astonishing success this season and this afternoon Penydarren face ‘the biggest match in their club’s history.’

They play Bangor City at Nantporth in North Wales and hundreds of supporters are travelling from Merthyr Tydfil to back their team.

The Welsh Cup quarter-final is being shown live on S4C’s Sgorio programme with the broadcast starting at 2.30pm.

The JD Sports Welsh Cup.

Fifth-tier Penydarren BGC have already created plenty of headlines on their first ever foray into one of the world’s oldest cup competitions.

They have progressed through six rounds, starting at the first qualifying stage and have scored 20 goals in total while conceding six.

Penydarren are still unbeaten this season in the league and cups. They are also through to the FAW Trophy semi-finals where they play Cymru Alliance Conwy Borough at Aberystwyth’s Park Avenue ground next weekend.

They are sixth in the South Wales Alliance League Premier Division side having played considerably less games than all of their rivals.

They have won 10 of their 11 Alliance league and drawn the other, scoring 39 goals and conceding four.

With a large travelling support from the Merthyr area there should be a great atmosphere at the VSM Bangor Stadium on Sunday afternoon (2.45pm kick-off)..

Host club have won the famous old trophy eight times – their first triumph in 1889 – and played in 18 finals.

Bangor have beaten lower league opposition in both rounds they have been involved in, winning 4-3 against Cwmamman United and 3-2 at Spar Mid Wales League team Llanrheadr Ym Mochnant.

All three quarter-final ties scheduled to be played yesterday were postponed and will be played this midweek.

They are Carmarthen Town and Aberystwyth Town, Connahs Quay Nomads v The New Saints and Carmarthen Town v Aberystwyth.
