Merthyr Town signed a new player before their Southern League home match against Basingstoke Town at the Loadlok Community Stadium.

Teenager Harry Franklin, who plays in midfield or at full-back, has joined the Martyrs on loan from Premier Division rivals Hereford FC.

The 17-year-old went straight into the starting line-up against Basingstoke, although he won’t be able to play when Merthyr play Hereford at home on Boxing Day.

Ed Lewiston, aged 15, was in goal for the Martyrs, covering for first choice Cameron Clarke.

Former Cardiff City keeper Clarke was injured in Merthyr’s last fixture and is ruled out until the new year.

Manager Gavin Williams again named a mix of young and experienced players, while he had Ian Traylor, Ashley Evans and Ryan Prosper among the substitutes.

Merthyr Town (v Basingstoke): Ed Hewitson, Connor Hanford, Liam Martin, Jarrad Wright, Adam Davies, Harry Franklin, Craig Reddy, Matthew Harris, Miles John, Jaye Bowen, Kerry Morgan. Subs: Ian Traylor, Ashley Evans, Ryan Prosser, Jacon Flower, Liam Martin.
