Former Cardiff City and Newport County striker Matt Green has left League Two leaders Lincoln City to sign for Salford City.

Welshman Green, aged 31, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Salford one says: “It’s a refreshing challenge for me and I’m really looking forward to getting started and hopefully being part of a promotion winning team.

“I’m an ambitious lad and saw a great opportunity at Salford City. The lads have been doing brilliantly this season.

League Two leaders Lincoln now face promotion rivals Newport County at Sincil Bank this afternoon.

The Imps have 44 points having reclaimed the top spot from MK Dons after last week’s 3-1 win over Morecambe. Dons’ scheduled game at Newport was called off because of the weather.

“I always remember Lincoln as the place where we won 4-2 and Robbie Willmott scored twice on his debut,” said County manager Michael Flynn.

“But it’s all about what we do going forward and I’m hopeful that we can go there and put on a show. They are one of the biggest clubs in this league, big fan base, good young manager in Danny Cowley and the finances to build a good squad.

“That’s why they are top of the league.”

Cowley virtually has a fully fit Lincoln squad. The only injury doubt is goalkeeper Josh Vickers.

He suffered a major tear to his quadricep muscle on New Year’s Day and missed the rest of last season. A recurrence of that problem occurred early last month, but Cowley confirmed Vickers is back training and could make the bench.

Newport County (4-4-2), possible: Day, Pipe, Franks, Demetriou (capt), Butler, Bennett, Dolan, Bakinson, Semenyo, Matt, Amond. Bench, from: Townsend, Harris, Sheehan, Forbes, Willmott, Labadie, Pring, Crofts, O’Brien.
