Merthyr Town 2, Weymouth 1

Ian Traylor and substitute Owain Jones scored for Merthyr Town in their 2-1 EvoStik Southern League victory against title-chasing Weymouth.

The Terras had a phenomenal record at Penydarren Park and had not lost against the Martyrs away in more than 20 years, but they were left down and out by manager Gavin Williams and his team.

Traylor netted the first Merthyr goal after 19 minutes, firing home after good work by Ryan Prosser.

Ben Swallow fired just wide and then Traylor went close to a second goal on the hour.

Jones struck with the second, tucking away his shot from a Swallow pass after 70 minutes.

Swallow went close again when he fired over and it was clear Merthyr were good value for the Premier Division success.

Ben Thomas netted for Weymouth in the last minute, but it was too little too late.

Brandon Goodship scored four goals in the two matches against Merthyr last season, but he was shut out by the Martyrs, who defended superbly.

Hendon provide the next test for Merthyr. The London-based club visit the MetCoaches Stadium in Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday (3pm).
