The Martyrs suffered a second pre-season defeat in less than 24 hours, but player-manager Gavin Williams won’t be at all worried.

Merthyr Town deserved far more than a 2-0 home defeat against Cymru Premier club Penybont at the MetCoaches Stadium and then Williams fielded a young team against Brecon Corries.

Williams, Craig Reddy and Kerry Morgan lifted the average age a little, but they were included to add a touch of experience and help the young lads.

Home team Corries included Brecon-born former Martyrs’ defender Paul Keddle.

Merthyr twice took the lead, but were eventually edged out.

Williams and his players now focus on their opening BetVictor Southern Premier fixture at Harrow Borough on Saturday when he will hope that strikers Gethyn Hill and Ryan Prosser are fit after suffering injuries against Penybont.

Morgan fired Merthyr in front at Brecon when he converted an eighth minute penalty after Corey Jenkins was fouled.

Dale Evans equalised from a Brecon penalty (24 mins) and Keddle headed in to put his team ahead (28).

Camden Duncan scored for Merthyr after 34 minutes, chipping the ‘keeper from an outstanding Reddy pass to make it 2-2, and Morgan’s fierce shot flew into the top corner to put the visitors ahead at half-time (41).

James Jeffries equalised for Corries on 54 minutes and Joel Evans fired what proved to be the winner just before the hour.

Merthyr Town: Shaun Gardiner, Cole Scorrey, Owain Evans (Reuben McKay 59), Craig McDonnell, Cole Jarvis, Gavin Williams, Craig Reddy, Kerry Morgan (Mario 59), Camden Duncan (Iwan John 59), Cavan Williams (Mackenzie Chadwick 59), Corey Jenkins (Jacob Flower 59).
