Merthyr Town celebrated one of their own on Bank Holiday Monday – and marked the occasion with victory at their MetCoaches Stadium home.
Lee Lucas (18 mins) and Ian Traylor (65 and 85) scored for the Martyrs on a day when the club paid tribute to former manager Lynn Jones and named a stand after him.
A Martyrs blogger wrote: “It was all about honouring our most famous manager, the delightful Lyn Jones.
“The term ‘gentleman’ was invented for our Lyn.
“He created a magic recipe out of Non-League football ingredients during the late 1980’s and turned the then Merthyr Tydfil team into one of greatest teams around.
“Jones, more of a Quiet Man than John Wayne was ably backed off the field by club chairman John Reddy and turned the soccer spotlight onto our little Valleys town like never before.
“There is no doubt Lyn Jones deserves a stand to be named after him for such remarkable achievements.”

Cynan Valley sharpshooter Ian Traylor led the Merthyr charge against Supermarine and was voted man of the match.
Jamie Veale’s perfectly placed pass, lifted over the head of the last defender, set up one of Traylor’s goals and our blogger described it as ‘the assist of the season’.
“Traylor still had a lot to do, but one-on-one he is deadly,” added the Martyrs blogger. “But while Ian Traylor’s goals are always a pleasure to watch, the best goal of the day came from Lee Lucas.
“After the only first half move of quality, the ball was moved through midfield, finally resulting in a strike that nobody could have stopped.”
‘Marine were captained by former Merthyr striker Stuart Fleetwood and he was shackled by Martyrs’ man Kyle Patten.
Substitute Simpson Kane scored for, hauling his team back to 2-1 down at that stage.

The searing Bank Holiday heat made life hard for all the players, but Merthyr produced a solid team performance.
Swindon manager Lee Spalding was far from happy, saying: “It was probably one of our worst performances of the season.
“We weren’t at it for the full 90 minutes. We showed what we are capable of in spells, but, unfortunately, playing for 30 minutes of the 90 isn’t going to win you many games of football.
“We started poorly and until Merthyr scored their first goal, we didn’t really get playing. We were sloppy in possession.”
Merthyr went ahead after Kerry Morgan ran untracked down the right and found Lee Lucas, who also enjoyed the freedom of the penalty area to rifle home the first goal from an angle.
The home team hit the inside of a post before scoring their second soon after the hour mark.
Mat Liddiard denied Owain Jones when he cleared off the line before picking up a booking for a foul which led to the second goal.
From a tight angle it looked more favourable for a cross than a shot, but Ian Traylor stepped up and whacked in a low effort to the near post which Matt Dinsley could only deflect high into his own net.

Simpson scored scored after Ryan Campbell’s effort rebounded off the bar, but Traylor made the game safe when he latched onto a long ball over the top, jinking inside Matt Williams and finished into the corner.
