Merthyr Town are intent on breaking into the Southern League play-off positions and they can strike a crucial blow at the MetCoaches Stadium on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

The Martyrs are eighth in the Premier table, but only one point behind Tiverton Town in fifth.

That makes Merthyr’s home clash with Devon club Tivvy a crucial fixture for manager Gavin Williams and his team.

The visitors have strengthened their team by signing teenage forward Cameron Allen on loan from Bristol Rovers plus 22-year-old former Taunton midfield player Josh Wadham from Wellington.

Both played in Tiverton’s goalless draw against Hendon on Saturday.

Tivvy won that day and went close in their League match with Tom Bath and Levi Landricombe hitting posts.

Manager Martyn Rogers is in his second spell in charge at Tiverton, a former club player who became their most successful manager.

Rogers led the Yellows to three FA Vase finals during the nineties, winning twice, in 1998 and 1999 at Wembley Stadium, when they became only the third ever club to successfully defend the trophy.

Tiverton had previously qualified for the 1993 final, finishing runners-up, while Rogers also steered the to Western League titles, cup wins and several high-profile FA Cup first round appearances after ending his illustrious playing career at Tiverton in the late 1980s.

Merthyr have earned four points from their last two matches, winning 3-0 at Basingstoke Town.
