Swansea City’s Federico Fernandez has admitted his team must improve their cut price defending before they face champions-elect Leicester City.
“We need to improve defending from set pieces because they are cheap goals,” said the Argentinean centre-back.
The Swans’ 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday included two goals conceded from set-pieces, a weakness that has undermined the team’s performances throughout the season.
No team in the Premier League has succumbed more often from corners and free-kicks than Swansea who have let in 19 from set plays.
Fernandez admits the team are culpable and has promised a collective effort to solve the problem ahead this weekend’s visit to leaders Leicester.
“I think it’s about concentration. We have to concentrate on marking in every single moment. After conceding goals like that it’s very difficult to recover.
“We will focus on it in training. Together we have to work on this and improve.
“I think next week we have a tough game. We will have to play well because Leicester are having a very good time,” added the centre-back.
“Two months ago we were in a difficult position, but now we want to finish the season well because that’s better for everyone. In the week we will train hard for Leicester.”
The Swans will face a Leicester side that will be without striker Jamie Vardy, with the player due to serve a one-match ban for his red card during their 2-2 draw with West Ham.
Swansea are 10 points above the relegation zone, with four matches to play – one of a clutch of six clubs between 11th and 16th place who are separated by just two points.
