Roger Johnson, the gritty centre-half who played for Cardiff City in the 2008 FA Cup final, was sent off playing for Kent club Bromley Town during a 1-1 draw against promotion chasing Wrexham.

Johnson, 34, was dismissed just before half-time when he caught Wrexham’s Sam Wedgbury and the referee dismissed him on a straight red card.

The man from Ashford in Surrey has twice played at Wembley and how he would love a third trip with Bromley, who have qualified for the FA Trophy final against Brackley this season.

Johnson has made 12 Vanarama National League appearances for the Ravens plus one in the FA Cup.

HIs Wembley appearances came for Cardiff City during their 1-0 FA Cup final defeat against Portsmouth and for Birmingham City when they won the League Cup, beating Arsenal in the final during 2011.

The 6ft 2ins defender has commanded £12,275m in transfer fees during his career. The Bluebirds paid £275,000 for Johnson, Birmingham signed him for £5m and Wolves bought him from the Blues for £7m.

He made 136 first team appearances for the Bluebirds and scored 14 goals, while he has played well over 500 matches during his career.

Wrexham extended their unbeaten League run to 16 League matches, but they have drawn 11 of those and collected 26 points from a maximum 48.

Caretaker manager Andy Davies was bitterly disappointed with the 1-1 at Bromley result, saying: “We’ve had no more frustrating result than this. We were in control and conceded.

“Credit to Bromley, but we did not quite do enough to get that winner.

“The lads were not happy with the penalty, but it was given and we have to get on with it. Another frustrating day for us.”

Johnson was sent off just before half-time, while James Jennings put the Reds in front early in the second half, before Brandon Hanlon rescued a point from the penalty spot.

After a goalless first half Bromley conceded a goal when a silly challenge by George Porter earned him a yellow card when he crashed into Quigley to the right of the Bromley box after 52 minutes.

Marcus Kelly took the free-kick and Jennings, making his 50th appearance for Wrexham, rose unchallenged to direct his header inside the back post with the keeper rooted to the spot.

There should have been a second goal for the visitors on 63 minutes, when Paul Rutherford picked out Kelly, who was clean through on David Gregory, but the keeper made a fine save to deny the midfield player.

Bromley made the most of their good fortune and were level on 66 minutes when Brandan Hanlan scored from a penalty. Wrexham’s Shaun Pearson was judged to have pushed over substitute Omar Bugiel.

Kelly hit a post and Wrexham went close several times. Bromley fell back, battled to hang on and the 10 men managed to claw out a draw.

The next match for Wrexham is against Boredom Wood at the Racecourse on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

Bromley: Gregory, Holland, Raymond (Rees 64), Hanlan (D Johnson 90), Mekki, Higgs, Sterling, Porter (Bugiel 57), R. Johnson, Sutherland, Woolfenden. Subs not used: Chorley, Wanadio.
