Bala Town’s JD Welsh Premier League woes continued on Saturday after a second-half strike from Bangor City debutant James Demetriou condemned the Lakesiders to their fifth defeat in eight games.
The Maes Tegid outfit rode out early pressure from Bangor before Andraj Jones’ long range effort threatened to break the deadlock before half-time.
Demetrious, signed by the Citizens just 24 hours earlier. then made the perfect start to his Bangor City career.
With 15-minutes remaining, the former Swansea City starlet beat Bala’s Ashley Morris with a swerving shot from 25-yards.
“It was good to get the monkey off my back early – every striker wants to that on their debut,” he explained following the game.
“They’re a great bunch of boys and they played some really good football so this is something I’m very much looking forward to.”
That win puts Bangor top of the JD Welsh Premier League table – until Tuesday at least, when second-placed The New Saints visit Connah’s Quay in a second-versus-fourth showdown.
Bangor’s management duo of Kevin Nicholson and Gary Taylor-Fletcher will be hoping the 22-year-old can be another piece in the puzzle as the club build for success after an encouraging start to the new campaign.
“James is eager to prove himself. He is a hard-working goal scorer and will give another dimension to our attacking play,” said player/assistant boss Taylor Fletcher.
“He has been highly recommended by former teammate Henry Jones, and impressed during his time with Nottingham Forest and Swansea City. He has all the ingredients to be a major success for Bangor City.”
Cardiff Met climb to third in the table after Will Fuller secured his team a hard-fought clean-sheet. Visitors Llandudno piled on the pressure after Chris Baker had put the Students ahead but were unable to find a way past Met stopper Fuller, as Christian Edwards’ team continue to impress.
Prestatyn Town fought back twice before snatching an added time winner through Jack Kenny to leave Carmarthen Town rooted to the foot of the table.
Liam Thomas and Liam Griffiths had twice put the Old Gold in the driving seat but Jack Lewis and Jack Higgins replied for the hosts.
Carmarthen slip to the bottom of table after winless Aberystwyth were held to a goalless draw by Barry Town.
