It’s Welsh Cup semi-final weekend as Connah’s Quay Nomads face Llanelli Town and The New Saints meet Cambrian United.

His father, Duncan, won the FA Cup with Everton 30 years ago and now 21-year-old Cameron Ferguson is hoping to win the JD Welsh Cup with Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Ferguson junior joined the Nomads at the start of last month and has come off the bench four times for his new club.

Getting the call for the JD Welsh Cup semi-final against JD Cymru South leaders Llanelli Town at Park Avenue on Saturday would allow him to stay in the hunt to match his father’s silverware.

As the defending champions, the Nomads will be looking to confirm their tags as favourites against a team in the tier below them, but know it won’t be just a case of turning up to take the win and move into a final showdown with either The New Saints or Cambrian United.

TNS have already won the Nathaniel MG Cup and on Friday night they officially retained their JD Cymru Premier title when nearest rivals Penybont - who needed to win - could only manage a goalless draw at home to Cardiff Met.

Now, the Saints are determined to make good for losing to the Nomads in last season’s Welsh Cup final at Rodney Parade to complete the treble.

Wins over Guilsfield, Trefelin, Mold Alexandra and Caerau Ely booked the Nomads’ ticket into the final four and once again they are facing opposition from Tier 2.

Not that Llanelli are easy beats, far from it.

They are currently two points clear of Trethomas Bluebirds at the top of the JD Cyrmu South and are hoping to return to the top tier next season.

This will be their Cup first semi-final since 2011, when a goal from Chris Venables againt TNS saw them reach the final – at the same Park Avenue venue in Aberystwyth as their clash with the Nomads will be played on Saturday.

They then went on to win the final against Bangor City 4-1 and carry off the Cup for the only time in their history.

Lee John’s current side have lost just one of their last 21 games in all competitions and have seen off Clwb Cymric, Pill AFC, Haverfordwest County and Denbigh Town.

It may have taken a 94th minute strike from Alex Giardelli to finally see off Denbigh in the quarter-final, but the 2-0 win over Premier side Haverfordwest County the round earlier showed exactly what sort of quality The Reds possess.

They’ve scored 10 goals to date to reach the semi-final and haven’t conceded one.

Goals from Harry Franklin and Josh Williams sealed the title for the Nomads in their 2-1 win over TNS last season, but neither is still at the club after many squad changes since last season.

One constant remains, however, in terms of John Disney, who captained the Cup-winning team last year.

Tannadice Park, Dundee, Scotland

“It was an amazing day from all angles. It was my first season as captain, so to lift the Welsh Cup and have my family there with me was amazing,” said Disney.

“It just rounded off a successful season in us finishing second in the league and then winning the Welsh Cup. It was brilliant.

“We know Llanelli will be difficult – they’re a good club with a good manager in Lee John. We’re expecting a tight game, but it will be nice to play against a team that we don’t normally come up against in the league.

“I’m sure they’re hoping that they can finish the job this season and get promoted. We’ve seen how they play so we know that we’ve got to be right at it.

“It’s the semi-final of the Welsh Cup, so if we’re not up for an occasion like this then there’s something wrong.”

The second semi-final takes place on Sunday, when Cambrian United of the JD Cymru South take on the best and most consistent club in Wales, TNS.

They also meet at Park Avenue with a 12.45pm kick-off.

Cambrian played in midweek any won 2-0 at Penrhiwceiber Rangers to move up into seventh place in the table.

They have already beaten Goytre United and Afan Lido in penalty shoot-outs, Llandudno Town and Carmarthen Town 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

This will be their first appearance in the semi-finals of the Cup and they couldn’t have picked tougher opponents.

TNS have already scored 16 goals in their games to reach their 13th consecutive cup semi final, against Llangollen Town, Cardiff Met, Colwyn Bay and Airbus UK Broughton.

But Cambrian famously defeated TNS after extra-time in the Nathaniel MG Cup semi-finals in the 2018-19 season, so they know what it takes to cause a massive upset.
