Newport County are without a fixture this weekend, but there is still plenty going on at the SkyBet League Two club.

Striker Padraig Amond, who has scored 44 goals in 129 appearances for County, has agreed a new contract through to June 2022.

The Exiles also know their opponents in the leasing.com EFL Trophy, having been drawn against Brighton’s under-21 team in a tie to be played at the Amex Stadium, Sussex.

Irishman Amond, aged 31, was born in Carlow and has made over 500 total career appearances during his career. He earned four Republic of Ireland under-21 caps.

“I am delighted to sign a new contract, extremely happy and settled at the club,” says Amond. “I have loved my time here.

“We have a great set of players, a brilliant manager and brilliant backroom staff and that makes it an enjoyable environment to be working in.”

Manager Michael Flynn said: “Podge was one of the first signings I made as manager and has been an integral part of the Club’s positive progression over the past few seasons.”

“I have no doubt he will continue his brilliant goalscoring form for us in both league and cup. He has seven goals to his name in all competitions already and long may he continue scoring them.”

The Exiles have two home games coming up at Rodney Parade, against Grimsby Town (Emirates FA Cup) on Wednesday, November 20 and Oldham in SkyBet League Two next Saturday.

The winners of that County v Grimsby tie will travel to play Isthmian League Division One (North) Malden and Tiptree in Essex.

Newport are handily placed in League Two, still in the FA Cup and have progressed through the Leasing.Com Trophy knockout stages where they face Brighton away.
